Ubuntu 8.0.4 bit version
Is the version of Ubuntu that comes on Dell systems 32 or 64 bit?

I was asking a friend about this the other day and they said the same pc with windows is 32 bit so it is 32 bit
Unless other people know different?

righty oh...what is tempting you to switch
If it makes it easier for you ...ask yourself these questions
What do you use the pc for mostly?
How well do you like using forums like this for support?
Why linux? ie what is not working now or is it £$ the cost etc
I got rid of windows slowly starting with getting more open source products
I started with firefox then thunderbird then open office then through windows out alltogether and not used it since...
maybe two years or more ago. I do not have any regrets. For me any hassles I do have were far outweighed by
those I had with windows. Changing to a linux system was not so hard then becasue they all had the software like that above that I knew already. I use kubuntu and when my pc died last year for a couple of months I had to borrow a windows pc and it was a right pain

I haven't used Windows in years. I've been using Mac's for the last 8 years or so. I am looking to switch now because my systems are really showing their age and I can't afford 2 systems like I normally get. I don't want to have to support one intel and one PPC machine and buy one at a time. If I go Linux, I can get both systems (desktop and laptop), upgraded, for the price of one.
I don't do anything major. Some photo/video editing, DVD creation, web site development, so a local server is a must (don't see that being a problem on linux),... IRC, IM, normal web stuff. The only thing I'm really sweating that I haven't found answers for is my video camera and my digital camera. I don't need apps to see them but they both use SD cards and would be nice if they at least mounted on the desktop on their own so I could copy data off of them.
Basically, I need apps to replace Apple's iLife stuff and I need it to work almost as easily.
I also have an external DVD writer w/lightscribe and a couple of external HDD's I will be buying a new printer soon so I can pick that with an eye towards linux compatibility.
Basically I need all of my USB stuff to mount like it does in OS X when I plug it in. If there's an easy way to span the desktop across 2 displays, that would be a major bonus too, thats how I work now.
If you have info for any of that, that would be great,.

The gnomad mp3 programme was an example of why linux works for me though..it was written and developed for linux users and done for free and updated (regularly too!) with help from across the network ( see here http://gnomad2.sourceforge.net/)
This is why I like linux and not windows
My printer also did not work straight out of the box so I check online in the forums etc and downloaded the right software, for free and within 2-3 mins it was printing tickety boo. My scanner took a little longer then worked ...then I upgraded and it did not ...but I never use the daft thing so I never chased it up ..it is on a to do list...probably

If I am honest. I write this on my work pc...very new, rather expensive but with windows xp and it is so clunky and old. If I wanted to play a flac music file...I have to download codecs..it might not work..I could download windows media player classic but it ain't that good. I spent 20-30 mis when I had the windows replacement trying to play all the music I had.
I installed kubuntu with amarok on a new pc the other day ...it upgraded all the software...loaded a flac file ...it played...loaded an old wma file..it played as did a aac, mp3, wav...straight out of the box...and it looks nice too...up to date

I took a film at xmas of a drunken relative at a new years party with my mobile phone..plugged it into the replacement windows pc
What happened
1 Er whats this...a usb thing er um..shall I open it ...foudn the files..clicked on the 3gp files and could not play it...could not find the codecs...not for real player, media player...anything...spent hours trying to sort
Got my pc (kubuntu) .
plugged in opened up straight away
selected 3gp files and wet myself at how drunk they were and how awful their singing was
the moral was the pc sorted it in a ..ah I know what these are type of way
