I'm not sure what the problem was but by stopping the auto run when putting the CD in (using the SHIFT key) then restarting and at the BIOS screen going to the boot meus and bootting from the CD after which everything was then as i expected it with the installation of ubuntu.

Ok, it seems i have sorted it out!!

Job done and enthusiasm restored.
