Ubuntu Linux 18.04 recovery image for Precision 5530

Hi there!

I bought a Dell Precision 5530 some months ago with Ubuntu 16.04 preinstalled. From half of December Dell is also soffering the same with Ubuntu 18.04.

Is it possible to obtain the recovery image (iso) containing the newer version of Ubuntu?

What I have tried:

- using the page https://www.dell.com/support/home/it/it/itbsdt1/drivers/osiso/linux and entering my service tag gives an error and suggests me to call the Technical Support;

- calling the Technical Support but the guy said that he knows nothing about Ubuntu 18.04. He also seemed to me that he wasn't aware of the fact that Dell customizes Ubuntu installation as he told me that I should download the iso from the Ubuntu website.

Is there anything I can do to obtain the newer version of Ubuntu customized by Dell (i.e. working switchable graphics out of the box)?

I would like to supporrt this request. Using the standard ubuntu 18.04 leads to a laptop not being able to suspend / resume, which is rather unacceptable...

Thanks for your response!

However, this appears to be just the normal ubuntu iso. We are looking for the dell adapted version of ubuntu 18.

If your system came with Ubuntu from dell the recovery Image would be available.  Dell only supports the OS that shipped with a unit.

Software support is provided by Canonical through the following methods:

I too am getting this error when trying to download the 18.04 recovery image iso from the dell site for my XPS 13 9380 Developer Edition. And yes, my system shipped with 18.04. I enter my service tag number and get this error. To me, it looks like they haven't released the image on site yet. The Generic 18.04.2 ISO DVD image works.

https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201810-26515/

I tested this yesterday and its fine.

Burning the disk requires Brasero which doesn't come by default but its free.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install brasero

While most features work on my Precision 5530 with the normal Ubuntu image, I would like to get my original image back as well. Unfortunately I wiped my partitions before realizing that Dell does not offer them for download anymore, I run into the same messages that were posted above. Clearly, Dell uses a custom image, as the download button identifies this filename

https://downloads.dell.com/restricted//FOLDER05470685M/1/dell-bto-bionic-beaver-Ubuntu 18.04-Precision 5530-X28-20180920-3_A00.iso

I am guessing that they restricted the access to this file because they shift to the image download via the BIOS recovery tool. However even that does not work for me, after searching for several seconds, it concludes that my OS is incompatible (not verbatim).

Some of these issues are because support is not free.

I would like to express my support for this request. I personally have a Precision 5520, but using its service tag on the "Download Linux Recovery Image" page (https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/osiso/linux) only brings up an option of downloading the image for Ubuntu 16.04 for me, which is what was available at the time this device was delivered, and what I ordered with it.

I'm pretty confident that the Precision 5530 is similar enough that a Dell Ubuntu 18.04 recovery image for that model would work on mine as well.

I also tried to contact technical support about this (I have a paid support subscription), and they told me to first "call the ubuntu", which I tried to explain to them is not helpful.
I also asked if it was possible for Dell support to simply provide a download link to an Ubuntu 18.04 recovery image somehow, but it very much seemed like the operator didn't understand what I was asking at all. On top of that they refused to escalate my request to the next support tier.
After calling again twice, the support agents each time refused to help me, as apparently Dell stopped offering service in my region after my 1st call.

I'm fairly disappointed that Dell is making it so incredibly hard to obtain their linux recovery images, especially since I don't see how licensing would be an issue here. What's to stop them from providing a plain and simple web page with a list of image downloads for all flavors of linux that they ship from the factory?

@JoKeyser If you have since managed to obtain such a recovery download link using your service tag, I would be very grateful if you could get in touch

@ speedstep: I do not need you to reply with another unhelpful canned response in font size 50 again.

@derabbink, I tried again to download the image again, and this time, the download worked. I got a file Precision_5530_Ubuntu18.04_Recovery_Image.iso.

Unfortunately I don't really have the time to re-install my OS again. Will do so in the coming weeks, and report back to the thread.

Hello Guys, I had the same problem obtaining Dell customised Ubuntu linux 16.04 (Xenial) for my Vostro 15-3568. I pushed through Dell technical support - who knew nothing about the dell customization & told me to just download generic one from Ubuntu site. I contacted, explained & explained to a Community Admin here. This guarantees a view from Advanced Resolutions Group (just mention your country in mail). After explaining a lot, few months later I can download my Dell Customised Linux by recovery tool/website. They will find the ISO, put in restricted folder & link everything. Then not only you, but people with same laptop model & linux factory installed can download it. Please mention to customer support that THEIR WEBSITE says "Missing Information". Its a problem from Dell's end & not your end. You are entitled to get it, even if its Linux (which is Dell customised).
