Update on XPS 13/15 2016 Developer Edition availability

Any news on the availability for any of the new XPS machines in a Developer Edition?

And do you know exactly what specifications will be used? I.e. 13? 15? Ram/screen/etc.?

Thanks, Phil.

I have an XPS 13 (9333 from 2014) that is running great on Ubuntu 15.10 and the Dell D3100 dock since October. (See related posting for more info).

How can I connect 2 1080p screens does the mini display port on that adapter support MST

I don't believe that is part of the standard testing, but I've had it work on the Broadwell XPS 13 (9343) in Linux.

The display adapters (USB-C to HDMI, VGA and DP) are tested and supported.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the updates. I got my Precision 5510 and I'm very happy with it (and Ubuntu runs greats, congratz!).

I'm looking into accessories to hook up external display. You mentionned the fact that usb-c to VGA or HDMI is working fine. Do you by any chances know if the "USB-C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 3.0" adapter will work ? (My goal is to use it to hook up my HDMI display  and an ethernet cable at the same time).

Thanks,

Hi Alesfo,

I can answer the first question.  Unfortunately the docking station does NOT work with Ubuntu at this time.

thanks for your support!! :-)

Really sorry to say, but in summary those are too many compromises to take:

  • Still not available in my country
  • Developer Edition with Intel Wifi chipset is limited to 3 models (Windows: 8 models)
  • It's not configurable (if I want 16 GB RAM then I need to buy a touch screen even if I don't need that)
  • No compatibility with docking station

I was really looking forward to this device and been following this thread for a long time now, but in the end I decided that a Lenovo X1 fits my needs much more than this.

  • Hardware is Linux compatible out of the box
  • It's already available
  • Fully configurable
  • Docking station (OneLink+ Dock) is fully compatible with Linux

Just wanted to let you know and I hope it's received as a constructive critism. I would have loved to buy the XPS 13, but I really think that there is still much room for improvement...

"You can add memory to XPS, there are 2 slots."

Nope, RAM is soldered on. No slots.

Hi Mstucki,

I've had this same debate too. Curious your thoughts on this:

  • Availability in your country: have you thought about asking a friend out-of-country, or checked any of the shipping services, if they'd ship to you? You might have some luck asking for help w/ this on reddit/r/dell if that's your only hangup...there are def solutions.
  • An i5 Developer Edition w/ Intel wifi coming soon.  Did you not want to wait the extra couple weeks (I'd imagine at most?).
  • Lenovo's wifi cards are Broadcom. Do you plan to replace soon as you get the laptop? I know some have gotten it to work but seems there's always tweaks months down the road, dropped signal.
  • You can add memory to XPS, there are 2 slots. (Edit: On the current XPS 15 9550). The XPS 13 9350 (and 2015 model) are soldered on).
  • Totally right on OneLink+.  Where Lenovo annoyed me was the WiGig dock. It could have been so much better if it included a power source/mat so you can truly drop the computer and without any cables - period - get a "true" dock experience.  The dock hasn't evolved.
  • I also wish Dell had more customization options, but Lenovo is same way w/ prepackaging certain features   e.g. to get 16 Gb ram you're forced to buy the highest-cost i7-6600U. Lenovo won't even give more than 8 Gb on the slower 6th gen i7 chipset.
  • Speaking to customization, Lenovo's decision of taking the touchscreen away was a marketing decision to push the Yoga. Sure, it works out that we all want a non-touch FHD screen so it seems like they listened to feedback, but if you look at the config options on the X1 vs Yoga, you can see they've just changed the target market not really the "customizability" of the laptops.

Best of luck, if you go the Lenovo route try the FLEN*2V promotion via that promo website (google search that code), prices basically low enough you won't even need to call and haggle.

Dear Barton George,

it is really admirable what you are doing @Dell and THANKS for the linux support !!

Any idea how long (days ? weeks ?) it will take for the XPC 13 2016 Developer Edition to arrive in France and/or Germany and/or UK ?

My MacBookPro is in repair for the 3rd time in 3 month and my old Sony's 1st gen. core cpu is breaking down. I need a new notebook. Now.

Thanks a lot for a hint on this.

Thanks for the feedback. See my answers:

  • Being used to a local keyboard layout (QWERTZ, Swiss German), buying outside my country is not an option for me (and probably to others, too). Even the German keyboard would already be very different from the Swiss German one...
  • If I want 16 GB RAM then I certainly don't want to buy an i5 CPU, I certainly need an i7 then. From this pov, it also makes sense to me that the 16 GB model is only available with the fastest CPU.
  • The X1 Carbon (4th Gen.) ships with Intel 8260 Wifi chipset, not Broadcom. If I had to replace that, then I wouldn't buy it. Simple as that.

Thanks also for mentioning the promo code, however this is US only. Besides this, I already ordered :-)

Cheers! (and let's stop the discussion here, since this forum is not about Lenovo computers...)

thanks for your input and sorry to see you go.

Best of luck and maybe we'll see you back in these forums in the future.

Hey Barton,

many thanks for the work you're doing here with your team. I really like the intention of project Sputnik, however as long as I need to buy a Linux optimized hardware model only because of a ~10 USD price difference for the Wifi chipset, I still have hard times to see the success in it. If that Broadcom Wifi adapter didn't exist in the main 9350 models, there wouldn't even be a need to wait for the Developer Edition. It would simply be a software addon that could be ordered together with any XPS 13 model. (Would be too good to be true...)

I will for sure check back in the future, but I guess the situation will only improve if people also share their not so positive feedback...

Best regards, Michael

If only I knew this Docking station (OneLink+ Dock) is fully compatible with Linux . I would have gone for the X1 . I have already bought the XPS13 and WD15 thinking this is the 4 iteration they would have nailed everything. But I was wrong.

I am now hoping the type-c WD15 will work by the end of the month otherwise I am stuck with a machine where I cant use 2 screens and have to buy an additional adapter to make only 1 screen work or buy 2 new monitors to use in MST mode . Oh what a mess for replacing my mac to this machine. I am already regretting it

Michael the broadcom drivers are working on the Ubuntu 16.10 beta 1. The final release will be out on 21st April

The more pressing issue is none of their type-c dock is working on linux .
