Upgrading to new Ubuntu version
Hello. I just bougt a 530n with version 7 of ubuntu. Does Dell offer something special for an upgrade to version 8 when they start including it on the new pc's? maybe an iso especially designed for dell systems. im just wondering how the upgrade from 7 to 8 is going to go. i would like to do the upgrade when i get the pc...which will be in a couple days.

Dell have announced that they will be bringing out a new iso soon, but the upgrade is very straight forward, and many thousands of users have done it without issue. Once you get your new box, just make sure you run the update utility, and then you will be offered the chance to upgrade to 8.04. Make sure you have a good fast connection to the internet, and then just click on the upgrade button, and leave it for an hour or so. It would also be a good idea to burn a copy of the Dell re-install iso CD, so you are ready to get back to where you started if needed. As always it would be a very good idea to backup any data you have in your home directory etc.
I would make a backup of the Lindvd that is pre-installed before you start, by doing the following:
tar -cvf /home/ /lindvd.tar /opt/lindvd-1.2.5
I have done this on both my Xps1330n and my 6400n without a single issue, but have found the issues mentioned on the Dell wiki about the light for the wifi card do change their behaviour. As the wifi cards continue to work perfectly, I have not been inclined to install the fix, but you may wish to do that.
