Very little sound with Ubuntu

I have an Inspiron 6000 wiuth a dual partition--one for Windows XP and the other for Ubuntu.  The sound in Ubuntu (the latest version, I think it is Feisty Fawn) is extremely low and there is nothing I can do to make it louder.  The Windows sound is fine.  I have used other versions of Linux, such as Xandros and Mepis on this computer, and I never had the sound problem.

I have the same dual partition on a non-Dell desktop, and the Ubuntu sound is fine with my external speaker system, but for some reason that system will not work on my Dell computer.

How can I get the sound to get louder in Ubuntu?

No, but by chance I managed to fix the problem. I don't even know what I did differently. I have one more issue I am going to post. I really like Kubuntu because I can now do most of my work on it. And it works much better than Windows.
