XPS 13 Developers Edition first impressions

Hi,

My brand new XPS13 (i7/8GB/256GB) arrived today and I'd like to share my initial thoughts with you all.

  • Design: nice sturdy ultrabook design with (limited) ultrabook connectivity (only 2 USB ports)
  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS runs very fast and stable (in comparison with my other Ubuntu 13.10 machine)
  • Display quality is excellent, very wide viewing angles and the 1080p resolution using Ubuntu is very productive. But noticeable white 'pressure point' in the left corner when using a black background.
  • Battery life: I'm getting around 6 hours (first charge) which isn't much in comparison to other Haswell based ultrabooks (the Macbook Pro retina 13 can easily get around 9-10 hours, while using a more power hungry CPU)
  • Touch screen: personally I don't see the point of touchscreen when working in Ubuntu (even in Windows). When I want to swipe, I just use my tablet. Maybe a non-touch i7 would be an interesting option.
  • Coil whine: I'm experiencing a high-pitched sound when my keyboard backlight is on. When turned off, it's still noticeable, but very low in intensity
  • Speakers: Sound quality is decent but on regular base my left speaker makes a quite loud creaking sound.

In brief, I'm very glad a 100% Ubuntu machine is available for purchase with optimal driver support (Sputnik Team: thank you!) but I'm a little bit disappointed in the overall quality. The 'coil whine' issue and the speaker problem are well-known internet-forum topics for over a year, and still Dell isn't able to resolve those issues in the 3th iteration of the XPS 13 product. I'll wait to contact Customer Support for a repair since no clear solution for both stated problems has been found.

But, nevertheless, looking forward to the 14.04 LTS DE version!

@Barton

Service stack motherboards for this concern will be available mid August

Are the replacement motherboards available yet? I'd really like to get this fixed.

Schwarznase

I have sent you a friend request so that I can get your information.

That is a great question, I would like very much that any one ordering an XPS 13 in August directly from Dell either online or via phones to report here how your system is running and do you notice any unusual electronic whine or hiss from the system?

Currently the updated systems boards for the XPS 13 are being distributed to the different parts warehouses globally. Tech support doesn’t have the part numbers yet so services aren’t currently available. I am waiting daily for word when tech support will be able to start services. I will post any updates here as soon as I have them.

My team at work needs to put in orders for new laptops by next week.  If Dell can't guarantee they are shipping rectified XPS 13 devices then we're going to go for the Zareason Ultralap 440.  We don't have the luxury of time to wait for the new devices to arrive, only to have to send them back immediately to the factory for repair; nor do any reasonably-minded customers.  That this issue has remained unclosed since January is utterly mind boggling.

I want to give an updated on the updated system boards to help reduce “coil whine” on the XPS 13.  On my previous post I mentioned that we were looking for the boards to be available for tech support services in Mid August.  Unfortunately our third party suppliers were unable to meet this time line and the system boards will not be available globally until mid September.

Tech support knows of the updated boards and will be able to start services once the boards become available.

I apologize for this last delay but we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

The updated system boards have been available for new XPS 13 systems ordered from the factory.  Any new systems ordered today will ship with the updated system boards and should have not have the electronic hiss that previous XPS 13 systems where reported with.

@davidbaiguini  I've been trying to get my laptop fixed by Dell for a couple of months now. They replaced the motherboard once already with another board that did not have the fix. Now that the boards have been confirmed in stock, the Dell support person I'm working with is unsure how to make sure that one of the new ones will be installed and has asked his colleagues for help after asking me to "just try it again".  So, in all likelihood contacting Dell support to ask for a replacement board is your best bet though you will have to be prepared for no one to know what problem you're talking about, directing them to the proper threads here, facilitating contact with another more knowledgable support person, complaining loudly so things get handled, etc. etc.

You would think that hearing that a fix for the hissing is available that you would be nearing the end of your frustration. I hope you have a different experience than the one I'm still having!

The problem has still not been fixed. The support guy I'm working with has no idea to make sure I'll get the correct board installed. Wow.

Hi,

Can you confirm whether the remodeled boards are being shipped as default worldwide? I'm thinking of buying an XPS 13 from Dell Spain, and don't want to have to deal with tech-support on the very same day I receive it...

Thanks

Hi,

I'm considering purchasing an XPS13, as it really fits the specs of what I'm looking for (powerful, portable, long battery life).  I tend to do a fair bit of reserach before buying a laptop, and have come across the "coil whine" issue on the XPS 13. Honestly...the time it's taken to fix this issue (assuming it's actually been addressed) is a bit discouraging. And now, despite having produced a rectified board, Customer Service can't guarantee that replacement boards will be the new, modified ones? Did I understand that correctly?

Is there anyone out there who bought the XPS 13 in mid-2014 with the coil whine issue, who has had his board replaced by the new one and can confirm whether this fixes the issue?

Also, is there anyone who has bought an XPS 13 recently (starting September 2014) who can confirm whether this still persists? (Maybe Dell's still shipping flawed units...).

I'll be buying from Dell Spain, where I'm based now, and really don't feel like dealing with this kind of hassle (including the added bonus of Spanish customer support not understanding these threads...)

Any advice? Other issues to bear in mind? Overheating issues?. I've read that it runs pretty hot, particularly when streaming HD video, and know it's a common issue on the XPS14z, for instance, which I own.

Thanks in advance!

Aside from the coil whine,

Thanks a ton in advance!

Thanks, @InfraTom!

Wow...Impressive problem-solving capabilities over at Dell...Almost a year after the 1st XPS 13 9333 started shipping....

What do you plan on doing? HOW annoying is the coil whine?

I was hoping that this wasn't global/generalized, but have found threads about it in Dell U.S.A., Spain, France and Argentina...I'll add Belgium too the list too then.

This thread was most informative, and as a result I decided to buy a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro instead of the XPS 13. So far, very happy.

All i greatly apologize for all the hassle and inconvenience this issue has called.  I had thought we had switched suppliers and this matter had been addressed.  Obviously there are still issues.  I have just pinged the team and am trying to find out where the issue is.

thanks,

Barton

Ok, so I had a tech come out and Dell support said they would install a new motherboard. After 1.5h and the new motherboard, nothing had changed at all! Then, the Dell tech said the motherboard had the exact same revision number as the old one, so basically the whole operation was absolutely pointless. Their last solution is to give me a new machine, but how is that going to resolve the issue if they don't even have the new motherboards?

Btw: Normally, I would say I could live with the sound, but with headphones in, its terribly loud!
