17 R3 models $350-400 difference.
First Post! Hello Everyone!
I need help deciding if spending an extra $350-400 is worth it. I tried asking this in another forum but it's been crickets after I said alienware. Hahaha.
Anyways, I'm looking at two 4k laptops with similar specs.
When I was searching for a laptop, I had three things in mind. Gaming, watching hi res video and some photo editing.
I planned to play Overwatch, Unreal Tournament and The Division. I do not plan to play above 1080p unless the game can run at 35 fps or above on 1440p or 4k. Medium to high or ultra settings are fine to me when playing above 1080p.
Anyways here are the differences
The cheaper laptop has
I7-6700hq
GTX 980 4gb
256 gb of SSD
The more expensive laptop has
I7-6820hk
GTX 980 8gb
128 gb of SSD
So what does everyone think? Is the cpu, the extra VRAM but smaller SSD worth $350-400?

To reiterate and clarify; unless you'll be overclocking the CPU, i7-6700HQ is fine. The extra 4GB memory on the GTX-980M is nice, but not necessary. The extra SSD capacity will go a long way with game-installs, RAW photographs for your editing, and 4K video files.
So, my personal opinions aside I would say save the money.

If your main concern is price/performance ratio and you're going to be using the system completely stand-alone (without an external GPU) I personally, would keep the i7-6820HK and the GTX-980M 8GB and actually loose the UHD screen to recover the cost.
The availability of 4K content -though increasing- is still quite hit and miss, and I would not want to game at 4K on a GTX-980M even with lowered graphics settings.
1080p on the other hand, there is an abundance of content available for and an overclocked i7-6820HK, GTX-980M will handle with ease (so much so that your screen refresh rate will then become the weakest link in the chain).
I know this doesn't really answer your question, but it's just my personal opinion, for what it's worth (I'm new here too).

I just realized that I probably posted this on the wrong forum. Thank you mods for keeping it here.
@Renzou Thank you so much for your response. The more logical side of me was leaning towards the lower spec'd version but then I called Dell and I ended up closing the price difference significantly. I got a better spec'd model for close to what the other site had me paying for the lower spec'd 17 R3.
So I pulled the trigger. The computer specs I got is probably more than I will ever need but the rep kept telling me that I would be paying more if I chose to lower the specs like my RAM and SSD. Kind of odd but whatever. It's still way below the high end of my budget so I'm not going to complain.
I can't wait to get my hands on my first Alienware product. I hope my experience is good.
