There is no issue with filing out the 6 slots as long as you follow the specifications.
Memory module connectors Six user-accessible DIMM sockets Memory module capacities 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB Memory type 1067 MHz, 1333 MHz or 1600 MHz XMP Minimum memory 3 GB Maximum memory 24 GB (1067 MHz and 1333 MHz) or 12 GB (1600 MHz XMP)
So that would be 6x2 1600mhz XMP.
About the dual GTX 680 it is not recommended for this PC according to engineering but as long as compatibility it should work without a problem taking into account that you need to have the 875W PSU for the upgrade.
Oh great could you expand perhaps as to what problems, if any, I might get if I do go ahead and fill all 6 sockets with XMP memory in an XMP profile?
If i may ask a totaly unrelated question, i see that the newer versions of alienware aurora are sold with the gtx 680 in sli. Do you know if the R1 (i7 920) could handle two gtx 680's in sli or are there differences to the motherboard in the newer auroras that allow for this?
The reason i asked about the gtx 680 in sli is that there's not alot spacing inbetween the cards should you connect the two, is there more space on the new auroras?

I hope that clears it all for you.
