Alienware 14 has stopped recognizing WD Elements external hard drive?
Hi all,
I have an Alienware 14 that is only about 6 months old. It used to recognize my external hard drive (WD Elements 10B8 500GB) but recently started not recognizing it properly. When I plug in the hard drive the laptop repeatedly makes the windows USB device connect/disconnect sound in all the USB ports. The hard drive sometimes shows up as Local Disk (F:), and if I click to open it, the laptop freezes and doesn't respond.
The external hard drive definitely works on other computers and all the USB ports on the laptop work as I use other USBs and a wireless mouse.
If anyone could help, that would be great.

Hi,
If you have Windows 7, try reinstalling the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver. If you have Windows 8/8.1/10, try reinstalling both of the Chipset drivers, you can download the drivers from the Dell support site. Proceed to test the external Hard Drive and let us know how it goes.
