Alienware 15 R3 2016 M.2 2280 SSD
Hi,
I'm considering buying an Alienware 15 R3 (new 2016 version), with Windows 10 Pro preinstalled. The version I am looking at has a 256GB SSD plus 1TB HDD. I know the R2 2015 version supports replacing the internal SSD with a new M.2 2280 SSD, but I don't know about the R3 2016 version. I have a few questions:
1) Can I take out the 256GB SSD and replace it with another M.2 SSD NVMe based SSD (most likely the Samsung 960 Pro 2TB).
2) As the SSD that comes with the laptop will have the OS and other drivers, what's the best way to reinstall all of that on the replacement 2TB SSD once I swap the drives out?
3) Does the R3 2016 support NVMe?

1) Yes, you can.
2) You could clone the drive or simply do a manual install.
3) It does.
The R3 has 2 slots for M.2 drives, you could take advantage of that for the cloning process.

Unfortunately in my market Dell only offers 256+1TB config. No choice. Also they only offer the 6700HQ, not the 6820HK. So my options are limited. I can reuse the 256GB in the second SSD slot so I guess I could do 3.25TB in total.

if you are going to replace the OEM ssd, why buy the laptop with SSD at all? why not save some money ($200-$300) and just go with that 1tb mechanical and add ssd? $1299 for that 2tb 960, NICE. crazy read/write speed.

L porras : Can you gives us more details about is ALW R3 support NVMe based SSD, cause i bought an ALIENWARE R4 (new version) and doesn't support it. Also I notice a new version of BIOS has released for Alienware R3 and R4. But they don't specified if this new version can support NVMe.

Hi Edwin Gonzalez,
All of our new systems support PCIe nvme drives. Try different slots.
Also, run the BIOS update since this might help.

Where is the second NVMe PCIe slot? Have just change my 256 to a 1GB and had to use Acronis for imaging, didn't find a second slot??
