Alienware 17 blackscreens after nvidia drivers update/install

I just bought the Alienware 17 running on windows 7 home premium and when i press fn+f5 to switch to the nvidia card, a nvidia geforce gtx 860, and install updates the screen either black screens or stops at the welcome to windows splash after the install and restart.
Sometimes it will seem frozen other times it will just be stuck there despite me hearing the welcome tune and even being able to log in the screen stays on the splash or black screen. I just got this laptop and i havent done anything but install windows updates and get like antivirus, java, and flash installed. I've tried restoring to factory settings and i've followed every guide i can find to install nvidia drivers properly but it keeps getting stuck.
