Alienware 17 R2 keyboard and mouse lock

I have an Alienware 17 R2 thats around 20 months old. After a recent Windows 10 upgrade the mouse and keyboard locked up straight after bootup. I have reinstalled windows 10 and everything works fine until windows does it upgrade including dell drivers (for video etc). Once the update has finished, the keyboard and mouse again fails after boot up. In frustration I reinstalled windows 8.1 - same issue, mouse and keyboard works fine until the dell specific drivers are installed. I have run both the internal and dell website hardware tests and they show no issues at all with the hardware. Is there a problem with the latest drivers from dell for either the graphics or mouse that could be causing this freeze. It seems strange that the laptop works fine with generic windows drivers (although poor resolution) and then freezes when running updated drivers in either windows 8.1 or 10. Any solutions or advice?
