ALIENWARE 17 R4 SLEEP QUESTION

Hey have recently purchased an alienware 17 r4 and have had a problem where when idling and i'm not pressing the trackpad or any keys the laptops keyboard LED lights will turn off, then screen dim and then go into sleep mode. all within a minute. this is quite frustrating as this pauses downloads etc. I have tried adjusting these settings to 10 minutes including doing something where I changed a value in the registry and then doing something else however it continues to go into sleep mode... please help

Actually, you can disable the sleep on it if you go into settings.

Just type in the start menu Tobii - Go to Settings - At the bottom it has sleep after X amount of minutes.

So if you want it to conserve power via LED's and Display you can do that still and just disable the sleep function (I just checked after I posted, sorry). Me Personally, I Disabled it.

Hi,

Have you also checked the power/sleep options in the Alienware Command Center application, under the Alien Fusion tab? If not, please check to make sure you do not have any of these options enabled there. Also, which Bios version are you running with your system?

I have the sleep after setting set to 999minutes now as I had it set to 0 before. Will update if this solves the issue. I have the most recent BIOS installed from the website as I had an issue a couple of days ago with the keyboard LED lights turning off

Update: changing value in command centre has not fixed my issue. This is very frustrating as I'm trying to download large game files with steam and it's continuously pausing the download

Just a thought, since I have the same laptop as you. Did yours come with the Tobii tracking software?

If it did, disable it. That should fix your issue.

SoulTribunal It did come with that software atleast I've seen its icon in the bottom right hand tray. I'll try disabling it why would that software cause that issue?

SoulTribunal you've managed to solve with one suggestion what I've spent the past 2 days frustrated with trying all sorts of methods, posting in forums I even had someone from DELL support take control of my computer with remote settings and no one could come up with this simple solution.... thank you so much haha

Because the Tobii software is 'looking' for someone in front of the keyboard. When it doesn't detect motion, it (this is just an assumption because I don't know the core software settings) defaults to first turning off the LED's, to conserve power I would assume, and then putting it to sleep.

Mine no longer does this now that I have it disabled. I can let it idle (and in turn let my SSD's do their ITGC) at will, and it stays on.

Glad I could assist you, luckily for me I remember usually at least everything I do on my PC's.

Enjoy your Laptop!
