Alienware Area 51 ALX 10 Pin Conector

I was very curious about this as well. I was wondering what you thought about this mod someone already made to convert the 24 pin connector into a 24 pin and a P10 connector. Would this work? Also once you have done this, can you explain what you bought/did? Finally, the origional Dell PSU supposively keeps constant power to the P10 connector after you shut the computer off to not disrupt the mini motherboard incontrol of the lights and stuff. Did you have any problem with this like your command center reverting back to default each time you turn off your computer or was everything ok? Thanks.

That link is to a P10 (name only) 6-pin connector ... something totally different for old machines. Dell did do some tricky things with MB ATX plugs back then, but I don't recall needing anything this extreme. Anyway, those days are gone.

So, you verified this as well on your Area-51? On my Aurora R1 X-58, I'm almost 100% sure I measured the same thing (but I should probably check once more to be 100% positive). On the Aurora, we just have a standard Molex 5v/12v plug going to the MIO-Board.

If all the voltages are available at the 24 pin, this would actually be a cool way to do it.

Buy two 24pin extension cables.

Use one (mostly) the way it is and splice into the middle of it for your 10 wires.

Then, so you don't have to cut the MIO-Board's 10pin power off the old wiring harness ... see if you can find a section of 10 that has the right shaped individual pins and remove that section with a Dremel tool. Solder it into the middle of the first one. You would end up with an adapter that would be easy to duplicate and the original AW PS and wiring harness would still be working for possible re-install or sale.

Well, you have a point ... that would be an easier mod ... I forgot you can get +3v from a SATA power cable (sometimes).

I guess the only reason to fool with the 24pin connector would be if there turns out to be some "always hot" voltages there (and it's verified stock Area-51 AW-PS delivers them and the MIO-Board needs them for enhanced and/or full functionality).

The mod is constantly provides with enough energy for the MIO Board, so I neves had a problem. All the funtions from the MIO Board are working.

I didn't have to bought anything, I just cut the 10 pin connector from Dell's PSU, and attached to a Molex cable and Sata cable from the new PSU (Corsair 1200AX). So I have to cables providing the energy to MIO board.

On weekned I will try to put some pictures about the mod.

Hmmm.   I was recently away for two month and did unplug the system, as I didn't wish to let it sit there in possible bad weather.  Upon return I plugged it in again - didn't note any problems. Should I let it plugged in the next time I am going away for a longer period?

no i would defiantly unplug it in case of possible bad weather, it wont do any harm to it, like i said the worst it will do is when u do plug it back in and u hit the power button, it will fiire up then like 3 seconds later turn off and back on thats just the mio board reseting i think, but i always unplug mine.... better to be safe than sorry

Hi, I have an alienware area 51(non alx version), I want to take out the default psu and replace it with my new ax1200 psu. Any advice and tips? I confused with which wires I need to mod and else I am missing for this swap to work. Thanks.
