Alienware graphics amp with x51 R3

Hello everyone,  I am finally expecting my EVGA gtx 1070 sc tomorrow and will be installing in my amp and connecting to my x61 R3. My question is should I go ahead and connect my display to the card in the amp on initial boot? Will it automatically use the card in the amp or do I need to first boot leaving my display connected to the 970 in my R3? Obviously if I need to restart before it activates the amp I will need to be able to see what I am doing onscreen. Thanks for any answers you guys can provide, I've had a hard time finding people using the amp with desktops.
