Alienware system

My CPU fan sounds like a JET ENGINE taking off, but only when I play games such as WOW or COD. I mean it goes up to about 4000 RPMS and stays there till the game goes off.. Any suggestions?

What make and model do you have?

What makes you think it's the main processor fan and not one of the others (like maybe the GPU)?

it is an aura Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz . and I know it is the CPU fan because I have had the Alienware Command center app open and it was showing the system fan as being close to 4000 rpm's

Sounds kinda normal, except that:

- I've never seen my radiator-fan go over 2100rpm, but I have an R1. Still, I think 2100 is max for my system.

Also test with Dell Diags (outside of Windows) and CPUID HW-Monitor. Stress test CPU with Prime95 or HyperPI. Get some min(idle)-max(stressed) rpms-temps and chart it. Find out what is normal for Aurora-R4.

Are you under warranty?

No warranty

No problem.

Start with Dell Diags (F12 on Boot). Test CPU/System Fan and get Idle and Max RPMs. Also, test MIO-Board and lights while you are in there.

I will attach my notes below. Notice that max RPM *IS* 4000rpm. But like I said, I've never seen it need to do more than 2100 (even with all cores maxed at 100% ... like with Prime95 or HyperPI). You do have a better/faster i7 than me, but I still can't imagine it getting that much hotter. Especially, not in a little game like WoW.

If everything checks out here ... I wonder if your heatsink/pump has come lose, sitting un-evenly, the thermal paste is dry ... or some other problem with the Asetek cooler assembly (causing it to cool inefficiently).

F12 on Boot

Boot to Utility Partition

Test System - Diagnostics

Custom Test

CPU Fan on/off

- This test will speed up and slow down System/Radiator fan. Mine shows between 1200-4000 rpm

- - You might have to exit Diags and reboot to get fan speed back down to normal.

There is another test right below it that will show stats on all sensors/fans. Maybe run that one first. In this test, the "CPU Fan" is correctly called "System Fan".

You can also play with the lights while in there to make sure the MIO-Board is working.

You can also burn a bootable CD with the latest version of Dell-AW Diagnostics, and use that instead.

Sensors Test
-------------
- System Fan (Correct name for Radiator fan)
PWM 100 , RPM 1188

- CPU Pump
PWM 100 , RPM 1404

- the above are correct, but I notice some others are incorrect or miss-placed.
A newer version might have fixes. This is the old version loaded on my Aurora back in 2009.

CPU Fan Test (Incorrect name for System/Radiator fan)
------------
RPMs should be 1200-4000
On-Off test will work (low to high) but might leave fan on high and require a reboot to get back down to normal

Master IO USB Device
-------------------
This test is at the very bottom (might have to scroll down) ... but only if the MIO-Board is detected and not locked up

thanks but I couldnt find  the utility partition.

You press F12 as the machne boots. Did you delete it?

You can also download the ISO from File Area, and create a bootable DVD or Flash-Drive.

Hi caper24,

You may want to check this out. That’s an article we wrote for that exact same issue, it has some good tips and is not too complicated

As you wish.

On the bright side, you only have to put up with the noise until something over-heats and burns-out.

Different story, no problem.

Sounds like a good plan.

For example my system was off all night, just booted up and everything was great, but now after about 10 mins of being on, the fan is running fast again and all I did was surf the net, no games or anything,

UPDATE:

After doing a lot of research on the NET I think my problem maybe the liquid cooling system   I mean I got some CPUID readings that had my all my CORE temps over 100. Another thing I found is that when I run the EPSA preboot system assessment, it gets hung up on the memory test. So if it the Liquid  Cooling system, it doesnt sound like something to mess with. Also if I leave my computer off, say for the night, it boots and runs fine, no loud noises, for a bit but then it does come back, as aopposed to before when the fan was loud all the time. Any further suggestions??
