Alienware X51 No Video when using dvi port

I have had my x51 for about a year now and it has been working fine. Just last week I began to have a problem with the video signal to my 24 inch monitor. Last week my computer would not send a signal to my monitor and it would say power save mode, then the monitor would turn off. I restarted the computer with different cables and still nothing, then I tried a HDMI cable and it connect to my Tv. I tried once more with the DVI and the problem was solved.

My computer was working fine for a week until today...Last night before I went to bed my computer had to install an update before it turned off. This morning I tried multiple cables but my VGA and DVI cable do not connect, no signal is sent to the monitor. The HDMI works fine when connected to the Tv.

I have heard that the solution might be to open the computer and secure the video card, might have snuggled its way out of its slot. Or buy a DVI to HDMI cable and use that as a primary plug for a video source.

I just want to continue using my DVI cable instead of having to buy another cable. Please help me with this problem.

Hi psdsdrew,

I appreciate your efforts to provide a detailed description of the issue and the steps tried to fix it. I suggest you to update the video drivers and check if you can obtain a display on the monitor via the DVI interface. You can download the latest drivers from the following link by punching in the Service Tag and by clicking on the "Drivers & Downloads" tab:
http://dell.to/117d6Zu

You may also check if the monitor is working properly by checking if it displays color bands on the screen when all the data input cables are removed (E.g DVI and VGA or HDMI cable).

Please let me know about your findings and attach a picture of the rear panel in your reply if the issue persists.

Thank you DELL-Rajath N, I am at work right now but I will download the latest drivers when I return.

Where can I find my service tag?

The monitor works fine, the color bands do show up on the screen when there are no cables present.

Hi psdsdrew,

Thank you for your reply and for providing an update on the status. The Service Tag is a 7 digit alphanumeric code located on the white bar coded sticker on the back panel of Alienware X51.

Please let me know about your findings.

Hi psdsdrew,

Thank you for your reply and for providing an update on the status. I suggest you to uninstall the video cards from the Device Manager along with the driver by checking the "Delete the driver software for this device". Restart the system and install the latest drivers again.

Please let me know about the status along with a picture of the back panel if the issue persists.

Well now I bought a DVI to HDMI Cable. When I returned home I turned on my computer and it began to malfunction. My computer starts up for 1 sec then turns off, waits about 4 seconds then repeats the process over and over non stop. No signal is sent to any of my monitors. The computer doesn't even show the start up logo. I just keeps turning on and off on its own.

Hi psdsdrew,

Thank you for your reply and for providing an update on the status. I suggest you to remove all the cables, peripherals connected to the back panel as shown in your picture. Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and release it. Reconnect the cables and power on the computer.

You will need to remove the graphics and check if the system power on or with one memory module each time.

Please let me know about your findings.
