Alienware X51 R2
My son received an Alienware X 51 R2 for x-mas two years and he wants to upgrade the video graphics card from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 to MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Armored 8G. My question is can we update with the current case and power supply, or do we need to need to consider a new case and transfer all of the guts into a new, large tower case with a new power supply? If the latter, is it as easy as it sounds and are there specifics to a new case we should be concerned with?

well a OEM founders version 1070 fits ... i upgraded to one myself from the 970 gtx in my X51 R3 .. the issue is it need to exhaust heat out the back not inside the case as these cards run hot, and they need to meet the size restriction of the case.. ... as for your current being a 680... idk maybe a 670 or 660.. but thats besides the point :O haha
anyway if the card you get dosent fit moving to another case isnt really an option since the power supply connection are dell only so a standard psu WILL NOT work with the motherboard so would require a new motherboard, video and windows OS to swap to a new case as cpu, ram and hdd's will swap over no problem..
otherwise its well documented around the web and on these forums that even a 1080 can be done..
lmgtfy.com/ .. sorry i had to :)
but to answer the question specs on the MSi are to big.. but link above will send you to info you need to get one thats does fit ..
