Aurora-R5 Unexpected Restarts
Just today my Aurora R5 machine restarted while I had stepped away from my desk. I did have this problem when I first bought it last spring but after a Win10 upgrade and new bios update, this problem no longer occurred. So far it has only happened this one time but am wondering if it has anything to do with the Win10 update that I received on Sep12-17
Machine Details >> Alienware - Aurora R5 Desktop (Win10 version 10.0.15063) - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 - 256GB Solid State Drive + 1TB Hard Drive - Silver
- Model: AUR5-9714SLV
Any thoughts will be appreciated ... I will update if this occurs again in the near future. TGH

Look for errors around that time in Windows Reliability Monitor report. Also any other red-x errors.
Run ePSA Diags (outside of Windows) and make sure it still passes 100% perfect.
A desktop computer should be on a good UPS (like APC) if you are looking for 100% up-time and no crashing ever.

1. Good
2. All those need to be followed-up on. Answer to likely there somewhere.
3a. Good
3b. Me either since you have a UPS ... see how that works? External AC-Power can be ruled-out.
4a. See #2
4b. No, something is broken.

Thanks Tesla ... I ran both as suggested with good news that the ePSA came back "all tests passed" (including the 3.5 hr memory test) - and "Validation 125752" if that means anything.
I earlier ran the WR monitor and it showed many red-x errors over the past two weeks ( a couple on various days) but will have to revisit tomorrow when I can read up on what the monitor is showing and how to interpret.
Re the UPS/APC I do have one but don't think it was a local power issue since the machine rebooted after a hard closing of various Office dox and sheets open at the time besides onenote etc.
Other ideas on what to look for .... or and just to assume the auto reboot will happen every now and than vs being systematic of a hardware or software problem... thanks again. TGH

Hi TerryGH,
This could also be related to blue-screens, download this app and check if this is related to a bluescreen what what is causing it.
BlueScreenView doesn't require any installation process or additional dll files. In order to start using it, simply run the executable file - BlueScreenView.exe
After running BlueScreenView, it automatically scans your MiniDump folder and display all crash details in the upper pane.
You can download it here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bluescreenview.

Ok finally got some time for the Win Reliability report and mostly good news being majority of the red-xs are due to problems that I had with known software lockups (eg. excel 2010/firefox v 55.03, and a cranky old info mgr called InfoSelect 2007) -- and the problems were primarily my bad key strokes or pushing the software too hard/too fast.
Most of the critical events came from the Win10 update on Sep12 when I lost Office2010 access until the next day on Sep13 when I deleted an old copy of Visio2003, which the Win10 update obviously did not care for.
On Sep15 there was a critical event with svchost.exe with info events related to Office2010 but weirdly showing Win Defender definition update and a Office Onenote "successful windows update" -- but that doesn't show up in the Win10 update history which seems odd or incomplete vs my experience with Win7 for so many years.
The next red-x shows up this past Thursday re the subject of my note above re unexpected reboot -- potentially after I updated Malwarebytes premium (C-event mbamservice.exe stopped working) And also two windows c-events (not properly shut down and this one with th eonly description for stopped working (DESCRIP RE "WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING" >>The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x0000000000000190, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000001, 0xfffff8019ac824eb). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 31f06289-6012-46a8-9126-6e3806775194.
Then on Friday only 1 red-x related to the old IS.exe/infoselect program & still another definition update for Windows Defender Note there were a list of info events re the Office products e.g., Onenote MUI "successful application reconfiguration") and tech details "windows installer reconfigured the product etc"--
Not sure if any of this info is helpful but that is all I have found and net net all is working ok at the present time but obviously a tad concerned -- thanks for the help in working thru this ... TGH
ps to Eimy -- I seem to recall reading problems with nirsoft malware so have held off on this. Based on the info above - is /are blue screen type issues still possible?

Programs like InfoSelect-2007 should be upgraded to newer version or replaced if they don't run stable in Windows-10. Remember about trying Win-7 and/or Win-8 Compatibility Mode.
Office 2010 should run stable. Be sure you have the latest Service Pack installed. IIRC, there is a "Repair Install option" but you can also uninstall completely and try a fresh install. Be sure to backup any data-files (Word, Excel, etc.) and Outlook data-files (like PST) first. Office 2007 Apps should also run ok, but anything older really needs to be removed or replaced.
For now, I would completely uninstall MalwareBytes and just use Windows Defender for a while.
Did this machine come with Windows-10? On the big yearly upgrades over the years ... have you ever had to recover from something going majorly wrong?

I just bought this machine this past spring (May 2017) from a Best Buy sale for previous year/R5 models and it came with Windows10 which I soon after upgraded to Win10 Pro (not sure if its relevant but perhaps should have mentioned that before), and this recent update on Sep12 was the first one with a problem re the old Visio2003 version. I think I mentioned I upgraded the BIOS to 1.0.11 after buying it and experiencing the first experience with "unexpected restarts"
Re Office2010 -- due to the Sep12problem I did wind up doing a repair of Office which first pointed me to the Visio problem -- which I deleted and then re-ran the repair with no problems and subsequently, all O10 products worked fine and continue to do so. For reference - I do run daily data backups so I am good in that regard.
Re the older version issues for InfoSelect2007 -- I only use it now for a weekly update report which I could move to One Note without a problem but have not done so as yet. Sidenote - I stopped updating I/S when a new/old owner took over the and I didn't care for the direction he took.
Re Malwarebytes premium -- I will take your idea of relying only on Win Defender, but for now it has only caused that one problem during an update so will leave this as is for now at least.
The bottom line for now is that you have helped me discover the way to check for hardware problems via ePAS and of course the WR report which will be a big help going forward.on detecting problems. Will definitely let folks here know if I have any further problem -- or have I missed anything else I need to do for now?
Thanks again, Tesla ....

Sounds good. No, no problem with the Windows-10 Pro 64bit Anytime-Upgrade.
Yeah, just keep working on getting Reliability Monitor clean. If you have more problems, we can try some other stuff (like SFC and DISM) but if those are required, I usually just bite-the-bullet and Clean-Install Windows fresh (life is short).
Also, check your drivers. You don't say what video-card you have, but at least with Nvidia, there are some particularly bad "crash happy" drivers released recently.
Aurora-R6 : Hard-Lockup and crash while gaming (SOLVED)
My Aurora-R6 hasn't crashed or had a single problem in like 4 months straight.

I just check and the nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 was listed & just started to update drivers but afraid of braking something that is not broken -- can you or anyone recommend a site for checking Win10 drivers as being the most current? As mentioned everything is working fine now but would be good to know for future reference ... TGH

"Most current" is not always the best ... it's always been that way ... especially after your card is no longer in the latest release series (the Nvidia 10xxTI cards are latest now).
If you want, you can let it ride until you have another problem. Then, I suggest you clean install:
GTX-1070 v378.78 03-09-2017 WHQL Driver (from nvdia.com) as my linked-thread shows.
I'm still running them to this day. Rock solid for over 4 months now. Not a single BSOD or crash. Not even an unexplained error in Reliability Monitor.
