Aurora R6 memory bandwidth limit

Hi,

Is there a memory bandwidth ceiling on the Aurora R6 system? 


I understand they ship it with 2400Mhz memory clock speed but I have seen people use 2666Mhz.  I found these and wondered if 3000Mhz would be too much or simply a waste of money if the system only de-clocks it, if in fact it works at all.

    Hi,

    This is the validated memory type for the Aurora r6:

    DDR4 2400 MHz, up to 2667 MHz with XMP (optional); 4 slots supporting up to 64 GB.

    So, 2667 is the ceiling, more than that will not be supported.

    I think this is closer to special OEM (non-Retail) Kingston Fury Hyper-X 2666mhz ram memory that Dell ships with Aurora-R6.

    This appears to be for 2 exactly matching 8gb DIMMs (a matched pair), and should therefore run in Dual-Channel (if installed in proper slots).

    Saw this on Amazon page. It is in-line with what Eimy posted:

    *HyperX PnP memory will run in most DDR4 systems up to the speed allowed by the manufacturer's system BIOS. PnP cannot increase the system memory speed faster than is allowed by the manufacturer's BIOS.

    Finally ...

    I'm not much of an Over-Clocker but I have done some recent experiments. I saw that 2667mhz was max for either XMP1 or XMP2 OC-modes. I guess also max for manual as well.

    I'm currently running DDR4 @ 3000mhz on my aurora r6. Would this hurt the system or is there a way to lower the 3000mhz ram to 2666? 

    When I put on XMP1 it automaticly get to 3000mhz.

    1. Cool, thanks for the report. I didn't think it could handle it and stay stable in dual-channel at 100% utilization. Also interesting the BIOS allows it ... so, doesn't sound like it's capped at 2666mhz.

     

    2. Well, Aurora-R6 system (with Pegatron-made motherboard, K-class processor, and Intel z270 Chipset) is spec-ed for for 2400mhz Stock. Dell has validated 2666 (but I think only for systems with stock VRM Heatsink).

    But I thought that was the point of Over-Clocking ... push it faster until,

    it becomes unstable or something melts-down.  

    I equate it to running your car around-town on the red-line all the time.

    3. I think the way it works (maybe you can verify it). If you run CPU-Z on your DIMMs ... it shows what XMP Timings are used for XMP1 and XMP2. To do something else, I think you have to set it manually in BIOS.
