Graphics Drivers and hardware-Chris (Dell)

It is obvious from the outpouring of forum members that DELL is not putting out drivers to the enthusiast gamers who bought expensive equipment from DELL at an acceptable timeline .

Chris or anyone at DELL- The cards are already priced higher than street pricing at many retailers, that being said, Why cant DELL use REFERENCE cards and chips on Alieware systems so your customers can use reference drivers??

It would seem to be much simpler.  I know some cards are reference (my Aurora with an AMD 6950 is).  Why not do this across the board with everything on the Alienware offerings?  It cant be testing and validation as a reason- beacuse what are you testing as a benchmark? games and software 4 years old?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I am also acutely feeling the driver pain.  Especially because I have a laptop (m17xr3) which is supposed to be there flagship LAPTOP platform.  The LAPTOP driver releases are a very rare animal indeed.  But this is NOT the old Alienware we used to know and love; and that listened to its faithful ‘user base.’  This is the giant conglomerate corporation (DELL) Alienware.  And to Dell’s ears, we are the little ants on the sidewalk screaming out for change.  They will only notice when the ‘bottom line’ graph has a shows a chink.

I would like to also add my voice to this.  One of the things that is currently coming up is like Battlefield 3, which wanted drivers that is currently not supported by Dell.

I also had very little support with regards to my system when I have inquired about the issue I was having with my video.  I was informed that it would be 'advised' to completely shutdown my computer not only on a daily basis, but restart it twice a day by one tech.  While I know that my computer is not a server level hardware nor like the XPS 720 I had 4 years ago, I was able to have fewer problems with the video on the XPS 720 with a failing USB than I have had with my Area 51 right now with some games, including Planetside where I am consistently getting a 0xc0000005 error after playing a period of time, even after a reboot.  This is a 6+ year old Direct X 9 game that has this problem.

to the person above? ... Dell actually told you to reboot system?  more then once a day? on a desktop?  now dell is just getting lazy cause my old acer bookshelf tiny system uptime has been 7 month 24 days 12 hours and 15 minutes( on a ups running Linux media center)  and it far from being a flagship ... more like  in the trash disposal of the flagship

that system is the slimline with 8 gig ram Q6600  blueray  and 2tb WD hdd running earos(linux)  and so on

so yea Dell Please actually do tech support instead of shooting customer off like we know less then you in fact you read from a screen and  about 50% of us are smarter then your level 2 and 3 tech ....but again i guess we wasnt so smart .. cause if we actually were we wouldnt have bought a dell product LOL

Well in just four short days (10/21/2011) it will have been 6 months with no video driver update for the M14X.  This blatant lack of any meaningful driver updates/support is beyond aggravating.

Would anyone be kind enough to tell me what is the latest version for the Radeon HD6990m.?

The last one from dell is the 8.8.51.2, AA0 and goes back to 7/29/2011. And there is no ways to know the latest version from AMD since you have to use the catalyst tool and dell doesn't support it.

I bought this laptop 2 months ago especially for the new games coming up this fall/winter (BF3, MW3, Skyrim, SWTOR)

But if I can't upgrade my video drivers to play these games because dell doesn't update their drivers section.... And AMD said that they were working on drivers for the upcoming BF3. So Dell better update their drivers ASAP or a lot of people will get mad.

Yes. The drivers i currently have installed on my m17x are 8.901.2 which are the 11.10 preview 2 drivers for battlefield 3. I cannot find a link to the mobility modded drivers. Despite what dell might say everyting functions amazing. Brightness controls work everything functions better than dells ancient drivers. When a new release of catylist comes out just google "mobilitymod 11.10" for example. Once you install the modded ones you can start installing them right from amd

Thanks Nmanfred:

11.10 preview 2 works well right off AMD's site on my M18x. Although I do have some flickering here and there on certain webpages. Dell's driver support is pathetic.

Is that going to void the warranty. Got a 4 years warranty on my laptop. It would be a shame to lose it.

That is a negative. As a matter of fact I told them I prefer to not have RAID 0 and would be doing a bare metal reinstall of the OS and they said that wont void the warranty either just please let their tech support note that in their records so they know what they are dealing with in the future. Call Dell support if you want confirmation on that.

Thank you, I'll call them later this week. Good to know there is another way to install the drivers.
