HDMI - Working or not?
Hi,
I've searched through the posts and whilst I've found some posts that are 'similar' they don't quite match my request so hopefully I'm not repeating a post.
I've got an Alienware M18x R2 laptop. Running Windows Home Premium. I've just purchased 2 x 24" monitors for my deskptop. Both work via VGA (I've tested them individually). My plan was to use 1 via VGA and the 2nd via HDMI.
I have plugged the 2nd in via HDMI but Control Panel (and NVIDIA control panel) isn't picking it up. I know the cable is functioning because I've pinched the one from my TV (my wife is currently unhappy with me as I t.ype this).
I've downloaded the latest BIOS updates and also the latest NVIDIA drivers. Still to no avail.
I've read through the forums of others suffering from HDMI ports not working and also other suggestions of enabling them somehow - but none seem to offer up anything constructive.
So my questions are;
1 - Do I have to do something to enable the HDMI port so that it will be picked up?
2 - Is there a way of testing the port to see if it's functional?
I've never used these forums before - so my fingers are crossed - thanks for any help in advance.

The problem is that VGA is analog, the rest are digital. You must use the same type of signal for it to work.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me. I hear what you're saying but surely if that was the case then the monitor would work if I just connected ONE monitor via HDMI?
Currently if I plug just the one monitor (without VGA attached) in the laptop does not pick it up.
So I'm still stuck.............

In that case then the HDMI port might be damage.
Are you using the HDMI out port (the one in the left side)?

Hi,
Thanks for replying. yes i am using the output on the left side.
This is the first time I have used the HDMI port since I purchased the laptop.
Is there any other way of testing it to check if it is working?

No there is no other way to test it, you can try to uninstall and reinstall the Intel and the NVidia drivers again, but if the issue persists then the port is the one damage.
