M11xR3 CPU upgrade?

when i take the i7-2617M.

Would that work with my configuration now? Or would I have to upgrade my motherboard, too? (I have the unmodified i5-2467M configuration)

The 2677M was not validated on the M11x-R3. Below are the Dell validated ones -

3H1DC Motherboard i3-2357M

3JHG4 Motherboard i5-2467M

RDK8T Motherboard i5-2537M

Y98C0 Motherboard i7-2617M

There was numerous posts about this kind of modification: unfortunately there is no mean to change the CPU as it is directly soldered to the motherboard.

The change would require very specific care and material to be successful.

If you ever hear of someone who did it and posted the method to do it I would be very interested.

So has anyone done a CPU swap? I have an i3 model and while I am mostly happy with it, I am starting to feel the bottleneck with i3 and they are no longer making m11x anymore. I wouldn't mind to go to a higher i5 or i7. Thanks.

Order a M11x R3 i5 or i7 motherboard of your choice, then order some arctic silver 5 thermal paste, and have another copy of windows 7 on a bootable USB drive (whatever your version on the bottom of the laptop is, re-use this cd key, google windows usb maker to find the software to make bootable usb)

The laptop is fairly easy to disassemble, just remember all of your connectors and screws. Neatness is the key to success here without any side effects. After about half an hour of carefully removing the keyboard, top panel, then the lcd, and the bottom, you will have exposed the bare motherboard. Simply place in the new motherboard and put it all back together

The heat sinks should be cleaned and there should be no thermal paste on the cpu on the new motherboard. Apply the new paste in a small amount, just enough to say you kind of did it. Its not THAT crucial if its not enough, but its a pain if it's too much. Its VERY VERY hard to not put enough, but easy to go over. 

Reassemble the laptop, insert the bootable usb, reinstall windows on a clean hdd wipe, then get started with drivers. The laptop will now be upgraded to an i5/i7 and be ready for some bigger cpu tasks. 

Google m11x r3 teardown to see steps. Its fairly easy and fun! I just bought a CQ56-115DX with a wimpy amd single core, but I ordered an N870 Triple Core 2.3ghz and put it in the same way, just swapping the cpu and not the whole motherboard, but it would have been just as easy.
