M17x refuses to install VGA driver. Please Help!
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a M17X R4 barebone off ebay. It was manufacture refurbished. Bought the nessassary components and assembled. Problem, the darn thing will not allow me to install my VGA driver. Dell support said to install the drivers in certain order but how can I install .net framework first without installing Lan first? So the order needs to be broken. All I know is the bios reads the VGA card and windows detects a VGA card in Devices menu. But when I try install my driver its not being detected. Im not a huge gamer so the card Im using is only a GTX260m. Again bios detects it. Is this card not compatible? Its a good card, tryed it in another laptop and works fine. What am I doing wrong? Please any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I tried using using both Nvidia drivers and Dells (though they only had drivers for 600 series cards). It is a Nvidia brand card not Dell.. Would it work trying to find a 260m driver from the R1 directory or would that conflict with my Bios and Mobo?

what driver you trying to use? dells or NVidia's? if bios detects I cant see why it wont work although if you got an R4 the 260M was originally from a R1 which was a way different configuration so might be an issue... anyway
have you tried using a modded driver from laptop2video.com ?
is this a dell video card? or another brand(if dosent have dell bios it might not work)
also being that the 260M on dell's systems never originally supported NVidia optimus (automatic from onboard to discrete) and required manual switching this might have some conflict with the R4's bios ....

As 89fordprobee pointed out above, there's a compatibility problem that is most likely causing the issue with the driver. The GTX260M was shipped with the M17X R1 not the M17X R4, therefore, we don't have any drivers to support this configuration and it has never been validated by Dell.
Just to clarify the brand confusion, there is a OEM (Dell branded) and a retail (non-Dell branded) version of the NVIDIA graphics card. The difference is in the vBIOS. In this case, even if it's Dell branded, the GTX 260M wasn't originally released for this model, so the vBIOS is incompatible with the M17X R4.
