M17xR3 HDD question about upgrade to solid state

Have had problem of RAID HDD showing "error occurred(0) on Port 0 for several months.  Sometimes a restart corrects and Dell Tech Support has been helping, had some hardware changed out, but now goes through boot sequence, tries Windows boot then blue screen and error "DPC Watchdog violation"

Restarts the boot and says "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Ran ePSA and all passed except Hard Drive 0.  Error says DST Short Test failed. Error code 2000-0142 Validation 4837 and hard Drive 0 S/N 5WS3JJJ1A self test unsuccessful Status =79.

I suspect time to replace HDD;  I still carry extended warranty, but really desire to upgrade to solid state HDD.  Can you please advise of diagnostic prior to change out HDD if any, and give opinion on time for new HDD?

Most important, can I upgrade from RAID to solid state Part #342-5946...any changes in Advanced Boot SATA operation if change to Solid State?  Change from RAID to ATA or AHCI?  Thanks for help.  chris

Hi,

This system supports a 2.5 inch 256 GB SSD. There really isn’t a diagnostic procedure that I can think of prior to doing this, do you know how to properly remove and install the hard drives? You can use AHCI or RAID, however with RAID, you may need to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver during the Windows installation for the system to recognize the drives properly. Click here for more information on that.

Thank you.  I still need minimum 500GB x2 hard drive...is there a part item for the 1TB total (see below) ?   Or is it best to just replace with original stock 2 new HDD....thank you again.  Is ther difference in efficiency between RAID vs AHCI?  I don't know...

I may need support re-installing or going back to stock.  I have original CD's and plan on doing a reinstall and then add back programs currently have.   Any suggestions?  I am having a replacement HDD sent now automatically from Dell on warrnaty, but really would like to replace both and start fresh.

Does this fit?

TEch Info says it does?   Linked to my ALienware.   Thanks again.

Apologize.  I pasted pic and didn't take.

Support website recommended for my Alienware M17x R3 the

Dell 5400 RPM Serial ATA 2.5" Hybrid Hard Drive - 500 GB
Usually Ships in 24 hours
Manufacturer Part# KY48G
Dell Part# 342-5946
Is this a SSD and 500GB, correct?  thanks

Hi,

Yes, that is an SSD and it should work fine with your system.
