New to the Alienware scene
So I'm hesitant to ask this as I feel like I should already know, but what do the R numbers represent on the various models. I just purchased an Alienware 17 R2. Annnnd no clue what the R2 means :D

Hi,
The R numbers are just the 'versions' of each model so to speak. A couple of years ago Alienware already had an Area51 desktop model. Do a google search and you'll find the pictures of that model. It was a vert different model than the newly released Area51 R2. (R2 meaning the 2nd version of the computer, you could say 'release 2' or something.
The same happened with the Alienware Aurora desktop models. The first one was the standard Aurora, then you had the R2, R3 and finally R4. The Aurora R4 is now discontinued and has sort of been replaced by the new Area51 model. Since there has already been a previous Area51 model, this new Area51 is called the Area51 R2 so everybody knows the R2 is the new triad model.

As Mobi said, the R on any Alienware system means Revision or version.
