no audio at all
i have been having this problem on and off for a few months now and it usually goes away. my m17x r4 has been a great machine but now i cannot get it to play any audio through headphones or the onboard speakers. it says that there is no audio output device installed and it cant find anything. after uninstalling all the drivers and re installing them as well as undating my bios i am at my wits end and not having sound is driving me nuts. PLEASE HELP!!

i am outside my warranty, how much of a repair bill would i be looking at if i did have to replace it?

Sounds like a motherboard problem. At the very least ... it should Plug&Pray and be listed in Device Manager whether a proper driver is loaded or not.
In BIOS, have you tried switching onboard-audio Off and then back On?
If you are outside warranty and don't want to hassle with board replacement you can just use a USB-Headset (since "sound card" is in the headset).
A HDMI cable to HDTV or AVR might also work.

On eBay, those motherboard are going for around $400 (and hope you get a working one). Then $200-$300 to pay a qualified computer technician to install it for you (yes, it's hard ... lots of pieces).
I think Dell might also have an "out-of-warranty" repair service. Check with them about cost.
