Question on buying Alienware laptop
So I have been looking into buying an Alienware laptop. Since the Alienware 18 is clearly too expensive I wanted to get a 17.
From what I have read there are 2 generations R1 and R2.
While It would be best to have the latest one, from what I have read, it seems to have lost overall quality and have a number of heating issues with the keyboard getting warm along with the intake being warm. I say it has lost quality because the loss of the optical port which I don't care too much about but also the use of a plastic like chasis (or some kind of composite).
If anyone could talk about the information I have gathered that would be great.
My actual question now is: Is it even possible to get the R1 (2013 or 2014 i think it is) anymore? And if so where would I get it and would I be missing out on anything compared to getting it straight from the Alienware website?
Thanks.

Hi,
You can review the Alienware site to confirm which products we have available. The Alienware 17 R1 is no longer being sold.

Ok thank you for that information.
But as far as the things I have heard about the Alienware 17 r2, would you say they are true and if so to what extent? Do all the Alienwares (13, 15, 18) have the same build and thus suffer from similar problems?

Specific question demands specific answer, so here it goes: yes, some things you heard about Alienware 17 r2 are true to some extend.

Details please? I felt that went without saying.
I know a lot of people put down Alienware and so it is hard to get honest thoughts on these kind of things.

well the 18 has been discontinued for a while, you may find one at used or refurb depot but thats about it..
as for quality and so fourth, its all how you look at it, as a gaming system i do beleive its not what it should be, its gone the apple style or ultra book style as we can say way were everything is soldered on the board so if video card fails or want to upgrade cpu or video would require new motherboard so buy what you want for specs right off the hop!..
ive owned Alienware from before dell take over (m9700) 2 m17X R1's 3 M17X R2's (2009-2010) then a M18X R2(2012 to current) owned now the alienware 18 was after the m18X and i have no experience directly with them just the previous years but everything was socketed or cards so was replaceable including the soundboard on my M18X ... unfortunately i wont upgrade to newer system when my M18X warranty ends to a newer system due to the way they are built now, il just upgrade the m18X R2 to what i need , or custom build a desktop(unless i get some sick deal from dell) hopefully this helps.. from a User stand point anyway
if you want more info on specifics i can probably help if not i can find the info ..
