Recommended resolution for new 17"
What is the recommended resolution to go for when ordering the new 17? Will the UDH resolution be to small on the 17" screen?
The laptop will primary be used without an external display.

Not really - obviously it won't be as good as native BUT:
If you change the resolution to a multiple of UHD, for example to FHD, each pixel in a graphic is represented by a block of 4 pixels on the display, pretty close to how a native FHD display would look. If you don't use a multiple, some interpolation is needed and the result isn't as good.
If you use Windows scaling, and especially again use a multiple (say 200%), almost everything looks sharp with the exception of some old legacy parts of Windows that don't use scaling correctly. These are things mainly like dialogues and system settings panels (like Device Manager) so not really of any consequence.

It seems the options vary in availability, might have to do with Dell's resources. On the resolution matter, I would recommend the QHD if you game or the UHD if you do pixel intensive work like CAD. My 17r1 with a custom 980gtx 8GB did extremely well with the standard FHD 1920x1080 and to the eye was clear. I chose the QHD as I do not do pixel intensive work, and I want the higher refresh rate(120hz FTW!), as well as the higher frame rate, as well as the higher brightness, as well as the better battery life, as well as, well you get the idea. I am not really particular to whether the screen creates color 5% better than someones elses screen, as I will never notice when sitting in front of it.

The recommended resolution is something that only you can assess, depending on your requirements and budget. However, since this is a laptop, future upgrades aren't practical; seriously consider the 4K UHD display. I have one on my 17r3, and it is drop-dead gorgeous. The display and keyboard are the two main features that offset the pain of owning an Alienware.
A FHD display in comparison (Dell Ultrasharp 24") looks almost blurry. On the UHD display, fonts and edges look incredibly sharp. I use mine for video and photo editing, the extra resolution is really useful - if you are just playing games, that might not be the case.
In general, you'll set Windows to scale fonts etc 200% on a UHD display. There may be issues with some specific applications, but nothing too serious.

I agree, the 4K panel on the 17 R3 is breath taking.

You might see it a little bit small, but you could change the resolution at any time.

Great, thank you for the answer, I will go for the UHD. But only QHD is available on the Norwegian dell page, and I see the same on the UK page. And to get in touch with Dell in Norway is not easy as a private person if you have not place you order yet: The chat is closed all day, and if call and select private customer you are just asked to check and order at dell.no...:-(
Do anybody knowns when the new 17 will be available with UDH?

This laptop will primary be used for gaming, not CAD at all. Also there is now a X-mas discount until 1st December now with the QDH, so I think I will order tonight with QHD. UDH will probably be very small on a 17" screen, and we can anyway connect external bigger UDH display later.

As I said initially, only you can make an assessment of your requirements, and the QHD will be fine, and better than what we have down here. The UHD is great though, but I don't game (at all :-( ) but I do use the laptop for image and video editing, and also CAD. It is superb for my usage.
In NZ, Dell dropped the UHD option for the 17r3 (I was lucky to get one), only FHD was available. This is especially crazy given the 15r2 had the UHD display as an option, with a less powerful graphics card than the 17r3.
At least, with the new 17r4 release, the full range of displays is available (at least initially), but the UHD is now so expensive I'd probably never consider it.
Enjoy your new laptop. Despite the pain, I do like my Alienware very much.

For gaming at UHD or QHD only the GTX 1080 will give the performance required for a good experience. While reducing the resolution of UHD to FHD works, it is not as good as native FHD. My advice: If you are rich enough not to care how much you spend on a laptop buy it, but otherwise I bet there are much better things you can spend those 1000 extra pounds that it will cost you

Tanks for the info. I have ordered the QHD with GTX 1080 from the Norwegian dell web site. UHD is not an option at dell.no. But at the US page UHD is an option, but just with GTX 1070, not 1080...
