R.I.P. GPU
Hi Guys,
I'm bothering you for some help. I have an Alienware m17x r4 that served me honorably for more than 5 years now; last month, my abused GPU Geforce 675m passed away...first lagging, than difficulties in opening game with high texture and then BSOD every time I try to play games (all codes related to video card). Since I'm obviously out of warranty but I don't want to replace my beloved friend m17x, I've decided to search for a stronger AMD Radeon HD 7970m. My laptop is not overclocked and I want to maintain a compatible GPU.
After this introduction, my questions are:
- you think that Dell or Alienware could sell me directly that GPU?
- if not, there is any official/unofficial online store available? I've already checked on ebay (finding some in China...), Amazon (nothing at all) and Ztronics (but it seems that its site is down since last few days)
- do you think that I have to change also the heatsink (on sight, I think they are comparable...)

looking for a 5 year old video card.... dell wont have it.. online is much only option.. ebay for the most part if your lucky to get one thats not fried already.. the 7970m's are bad for failing early on.. one of mine melted(secondary card) on my m18X R2 .. at around 2 years old.. and swapped out for 680's since dell had no 7970's available for warranty replacement anymore and that was over 2 years ago ..
the 7970m isnt much of an upgrade.. a 680m would be better option but again still old.. i know you can get a 980M kit for around 800US or so shipped.. been a while since i looked but i swapped my 680's for 980's it was night and day difference.. just a thought..

Thanks for your reply. I was a bit afraid on using a non-original GPU, if it is difficult to use a non-original BIOS and I don't know if i have to change my heatsink. Do you have any problems with your GPU?

nope no problems atall.. and since i was running dual cards on my M18X R2 .. it was night and day difference over the 680's, it was delivered with proper bios(dell bios on the cards) and drivers aswell as new heatsinks and much everything needed to install (install parts that shipped at the time were dependent on previous card installed) but i opted for new heatsinks and fans , the support was top notch when i did have driver issue, on an update was fixed with a quick email.. with instructions and a link to get updated drivers and info for future updates.. was really impressed but its what i would expect for 2k of my money
