Thermal Paste or Thermal Pad ?
Hi i have M17x that came with two Nvidia Geforce GTX 280m graphics cards in SLI, as i can switch between hybrid and discrete graphics modes i believe is the saying,
So also it has the third on board graphics chip the Nvidia Geforce 9400 which is what my question is about actually because this chip shares the same heatsink as the cpu well i upgraded the cpu few days back and in doing so re thermaled the cpu but the Geforce 9400 looked like it originally was given a heat pad and not pasted?
So i left it as is and re-applied the heat sink back over both the cpu and 9400 each chip had 4 lock down screws around the cpu & gpu and hoped for the best.
But i have since kept an eye on the temps and the Nvidia Geforce 9400 which i never use i always use SLI with the 280's has seen some concerning temps considering its not utilized and every other chip is always at least 20 deg cooler i have seen it between 60 -81 deg whilst all else is way lower so do i need to buy thermal pads and use one under it or do i use the same paste i used on my cpu as it has to be the problem yes?

Hi,
We recommend you use a thermal pad or use the same paste, either option should help lower the temperatures. Those temperatures are high for this type of video card, especially if you're not even using it.

You're welcome. There are different opinions on the best way to clean the paste off. Take a look at this thread for some examples.
