USB external issues

I have an Alienware Aurora R3 and have been experiencing USB connection issues.  In particular, I have a huge delay when attaching a USB flash drive and issues when I attach my external Seagate GoFlex 2 TB backup drive.  The system seems to "forget" anything is attached!  I exchanged the Seagate drive and it worked fine for a while but the Aurora seems to be getting amnesia again!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

All I can say is the USB problems on the R3 were pretty common.

Ever notice the R3 wasn't for sale very long?

Anyway, maybe try ...

1. Unplugging all USB device except mouse and keyboard.

2. Set Power Button to Shut-Down machine

3. In Control Panel, delete all USB controllers and root hubs

4. Keyboard and mouse will likely stop working

5. Press Power Button to hopefully get a good/clean Windows Shut-Down

6. Reboot machine

7. Let windows re-detect USB controllers and hubs.

8. Adequate USB drivers should download from Windows Update or local install

See if that helps. If not, try installing (over-laying) any updated USB drivers available for your exact model.

Also, be sure you have the latest BIOS.

KILL YOUR MOTHER-BOARD WARNING ... if you do update the BIOS, be sure to do it the long or harder way with a bootable flash drive from OUTSIDE of Windows. Doing it inside Windows has a 50/50 chance of BRICKING your MB.

Hello, we are currently using an alienware aurora R3 cpu and having a similar issue. This computer is less then a year old and has been having major issues. If someone could help shine the light on this problem that would be great. The issues we are having are the top front and back usb ports have amnesia every other day. Different hardware like mouses, keyboards, and other usb powered devices are non respondent half the time. When the computer is restarted sometime it does not boot up all the way because it does not read a mouse or something. Also other times the mouse will just stop working in the middle of play. None of these usb devices are plugged into the 3.0 port, only 2.0. The computer also freezes quite frequently.

We talked to a few techs and they suggested us replacing the mother board with our warranty. They say that is my problem for sure. The issue is everything testes out OK in diagnostics. Both the usb ports and the motherboard seems to be working properly in tests but still has an issue when in use. I called dell to get a tech out and replace the mother board. Dell support told me that I must restore the computer back to its factory settings in order to see if it is a software issue. If I do this then I have to hire my tech guy to reload all the software, drivers, and server information. He is $127 an hour and said it would take 4 hours to do. He also says that restoring it back to factory setting will not work for a hardware issue and i'm out of this money.

What should I do?? Restore? If dell would just send a tech with a new motherboard then we all believe that would help. Even the hired dell tech guy that came out to test it says replace the motherboard if the issue happens again. It happened less than 12 hours later. But Dell is making more work and racking up more bills for me by making me do a system restore.

Thank you for your time and hopefully someone can help me with what this issue could be.

Best Regards

Josh

Natalia,

I'm also experiencing USB issues...the third USB socket on the top of my R3 has stopped functioning...any suggestions?

After owning Dell products since my first PCs Limitied 286, it appears that quality is much less than previous computers, and at a HUGE PRICE!

This is very frustrating...

Thanks!
