This is just me being me, but:

As I am sure you have already done, make sure the virus def's are up to date and run a full system scan just to eliminate the possiblilty of a virus.

John_Doe,
You failed to mention what process is using all the CPU cycles. This information would go a long way towards figuring out what the problem is and helping to resolve it.

Did you recently install any new software that did not install sucessfully?  This software could be a Microsoft update that failed.  Also do you have a network?  If a mapped drive is not availible Windows uses all resources to find it.

Ok in answer to all your questions...

The_Namek

I went to processes while it was at a stable 95-100% and there wasn't anything running that was that high the two highest were probably Explorer.exe at 26,456K and SVCHOST.EXE at 17,831K and everthing else was below 12,000K.

CsH

I have Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro and I updated all the virus definitions and ran a full scan it found no virus's.

I did not install any new software it just started happening all of a sudden. All Microsoft updated installed properly and I don't have a network.

Thanks for the help...any more suggestions? This is really getting frustrating for me!

I dont know for you, but a easy way is to format the whole harddrive.. And reinstall windows, and your proges etc. If it's still 99% cpu in use, and you havent installed 3d hand hardware lately, you better get som pro check it out.

Some parts might just collaps you know.. like, last time you got angry when manu killed liverpool etc. :)

CsH.

I sure hope the cpu running at 100% is not bad for my Dell.  Regardless of the game, whenever I play my cpu goes straight to 100% and doesn't budge unitl I exit the game which can span from 1-6 hours.  As for your problem, I would close all running non-critical processes in task manager and look to see what triggers the cpu increase.  Better yet, wait until the cpu hangs at 100%, and then systematically close the processes in task manager to see if you can find the cause.  When all else fails, provided it's not a hardware problem and it doesn't appear to be, a good format/reinstall does the trick every time.

CsH:

I wish it were that easy just to reformat and do a clean install of Windows XP and put all my programs back to how they are now. I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem but I really didn't this to be my last option since it's so time consuming. And no I haven't installed any 3D hand hardware lately.

Blitzzer:

From what I understand I don't think having your Dell running at 100% for 6 hours straight is that good for the system. And I already tried closing all running non-critical processes in task manager but it just stays at 100% and the system just slows down until I restart again.

No, I haven't tried that...but I just did it right now lets see if that works...

leigh_ann:

Ok, I turned off indexing service. What exactly does this do?

NOTE:

I've tried open different combinations of programs at the same time. I think I might know when the problem occurs now, it seems to only happen when I have SQL and VB.NET open...I believe the problem might have something to do with having both of these programs open at the same time. I'm going to do a little more testing to see if this might be the problem. Why is that? Isn't that kind of weird? They really don't take up that many resources.

John, have you tried to clear MSCONFIG to get rid of the programs that is running at the backgorund that are not needed.  Here are the steps to clear MSCONFIG.

1. Click the Start button, and click Run

2. In the Open box, type Msconfig, and click OK

The System Configuration Utility window appears

3. Click the Startup tab

4. Click the "Disable All" button

It is  recommended that you keep the following enabled or checked under Startup Items.

Antivirus software (Anything that says Norton, NAV, Symantec, McAfee)

5. Click OK

The System Settings Change window appears

6. Click Yes to restart your computer

Yup! I only have about 2 items checked on Msconfig, Norton Antivirus and systray.exe.

Thanks...

Anymore ideas? I'm about to give up...
