420 tech specs not correct

Question

Copied from the Tech Specs:

Chipset: Intel® X38 (Bearlake) with 800/1600/1333 MHz FSB

Shouldn't that be 1066, not 1600?

Hard Drives: 160 GB9 10K rpm SATA w/ 16M Cache

I didn't see that as an option when configuring my system. If it's offered I'd definitely buy it.

On a side note, how come we can't get better graphics cards with the 420? The 410 even had better cards as options. I guess I'd be better off buying one off eBay and putting in it. Anyone know if the power supply is the same as the 410?

Also, some more optical drive combination options would be better.

You are correct. It should read 1066.

The power supplies are different.

The 420 video card offers the much better Geforce 8800 GTX.

XPS 420 video cards:
Geforce 8800 GTX, Geforce 8600 GTS, Geforce 8300 GS, Radeon HD 2400, Radeon X1300 Pro

XPS 410 video card:
Geforce 7950, Geforce 7900, Radeon X1300 Pro

Thank you for the response.  It seems it does matter which of the 3 versions you choose to 'customize.'  I didn't know that in the past.  If you click the cheapest version you don't have the same video card options.  I always thought those were just pre-configured versions, which all had the same options if you wanted to change things.  That's not very clear on the website.   How can you tell what power supply you are getting Chris?  Does it say somewhere when you customize your 420?   Also, what's the news with the 10k rpm hard drive option?

Chris: I am curious about Dell offering 8800GTX video card with the XPS420. My understanding is that the 8800GTX requires a power supply with minimum 450W and with a min 30amps in the +12v rail. Looking at the specs of the XPS420: it has a power supply of 375w .. but mentions an option of 425w but no idea how to get that configured.

Still... even 425w does not seem sufficient. Am I wrong in understanding that 450w is minimum PS for 8800GTX?

* That is Nvidias statement. The 425w power supply is validated with that video card in our PC.

Chris, since you are answering questions in this 420 thread but not others....

What is Dell doing to fix the configuration errors on the sales page?

Errors:
Your Selection of Media Reader included in Dell Bluetooth Package requires a Media Hub selection in the Bluetooth Options.
Your video card selection requires the 425W power supply available only with select processors.

You state above that if you select the 8800 video card, that it will automatically switch to the correct power supply. The sales page error message says it's dependent on the processor selection and none of the available processors will clear the error.

If Bluetooth is changed to "none" then it gives a configuration error. Apparently the 420 is pre-configured to include "13-in-1 media reader included in bluetooth package". It is this default item that causes the error.

I cannot buy a 420 via the Dell website until these configuration errors are fixed by Dell so I can choose the config that I want. These are errors that prevent me from making a purchase.

Edit:

Your Sound Card selection is not compatible with your Physics Accelerator selection.

This is because of the limited number of PCI slots. I should be able to unselect the PCI modem, thus clearing a slot, and clear the error.

For all those that mentioned questions about the 8800GTX and power supplies.  I have a XPS 410 375 watt power supply that runs the 8800GTX just fine.  And yes my system was ordered from dell with the 8800GTX.

Looks like they fixed it, but you're still required to get the Dell 19 in 1 Media Reader... who knows how much that adds to the costs

Based on prices before the fix... bluetooth and 19-in-1 is costing you $40 extra dollars.   They 'fixed' the video card / power supply problem by moving the 8800 to the high-end 420 build (on the screen where you have three build options).  Based on identical builds, the bigger power supply (which presumably is the difference as it's needed for the 8800) is costing about $40.   So if you want the bigger power supply and want either the mid or high end graphics, go w/ the high end build.  At least as of right now, you can downsize the blu-ray burner to a more reasonably priced dvd burner.
