4700 computer overheats

Ok..

My computer is a dimension 4700. It has a bfg 6600 gt oc graphics card. I believe my computer overheats while playing video games. It either turns into a black screen, or restarts computer, or sometimes "blue screen of death".

This does not occur though when i take off my computer cover and put a fan next to my computer.

Please help me.

game-addict,

If there is a PCI slot card directly under the video card, move the PCI slot card away from the video card. Then, check the system out with the cover on.

Yes.

There is a 56k modem card right under the graphics card. I'll take it out since I cable internet.

In addition to removing the modem that is adjacent to the 6600GT, you could place a PCI fan into the slot where the modem was to gain some additional cooling for your gpu.

or instead of making your computer noisier (YES a pci fan will to some degree), you could buy an arctic cooling nvidia silencer vga cooler set.

but i am not sure it is compatible with the AGP version of the card, if that is what he has.

according to this link.
its running a PCI-E card, if he is infact using a 4700.

If you do choose to use a different fan system on your graphics card, you will void any warranty that is on it. Many people do not find a PCI fan noisy, but just remember, noisy is very subjective.

What are your temp readings under load (heavy gaming)? The video card should tell you for sure if it is overheating.

I wouldn't worry too much, the cards do run hot in the Dell systems. My 6800GTO sometimes runs up to 85C while playing games.

The graphics temp (with case on) while playing games gets up to around mid 80's celsius.

Does your computer also freeze or restart in the middle of a game Brainonska?

mid-80's seem high to me but unless you're also getting a lot of yellow warning bars, it's probably not enough to shut down your PC. Your threshold for slowdown is probably 127c. Your PSU will shut down if overloaded but 305W should be enough unless you're running 3 - 4 HD's, 3 - 4 optical drives and a bunch of USB/PCI attachments. Your test with opening the case and using a fan sure seems to indicate a heat problem. Have you done anything to your CPU heatsink? If the contact isn't good. your CPU could be overheating.
