630 Fan controller issue

It seems to me the nvidia control panel is a bit flakey still...

I'm having problems with it as well, I haven't changed any setting except for the led colors, (I'm inexperienced when it comes to OC'ing, so I don't want to alter anything until I'm more knowledgable on that, and now I'm even more afraid to), so my fans are still on automatic at 100%

but odd things have happened to me too, (i.e.Chasis icon dissapearing from the performance tab in Nvidia control panel), blue screens either during nvidia driver installs, or while looking for optimal setting for GPU

I was told there may be a firmware update soon, and some of these issues may be addressed, I hope so.  The 630 is still really new, I'm not surprised if some bugs need to be worked out. 

I can't believe their sending you a replacement, you have to let us know if that made a difference.

I really do like Dell, I love my XPS Gen 1, at almost 5yrs old, its still a great machine, I just hope I can get the most out of my 630, it should really be leaving the gen 1 in the dust.  But in some aspects so far, it doesn't seem that way.

ChrisM- The shipped default for my 630 had both the pci cage and hdd fans at 13% ( dfltuser- if I remember correctly). I was able to create several new profiles for hard core , video playback,  night and surfing conditions that ran successfully for several days, then some gremlin took over my control panel yesterday, reset the fan speeds to 55% in all profiles and will not let me modify or create a new profile with different fan settings. All other features in the control panel are working normally and can be modified successfully. Very strange. With the fans at this speed I'm starting to feel like I'm in some kind of server cool room.    

After hours of reconfig via support, a reinstall was tried and did nothing other than reset the flat panel settings to some kind of arctic white-out like condition. Quite annoying.

Interesting- Dell is shipping a new mobo for me. JG, Did yours ship at 55% or did they mysteriously change after a process? Were you ever able to change the fan speed from the control panel?

Seems ( to me) like some sort of bios default asserting itself.

Please let us know if a new MB, or cpu corrects your fan/control panel issues, my fans are reading at 100% right now in the control panel and system monitor (automatic setting checked), I haven't altered them and don't know if this is correct (could be a software glitch).  The CPU doesn't seem as loud as you described, nowhere near as loud as my Gen1 or Laptop both a few years old (p4's w/HT) So it maybe a software glitch on my end, I really can't tell.

Have you updated to the latest NV drivers/software pacs? The 630 seems to have shipped with outdated NV sys mon software that gave many temp. issues. I believe they are posted under '630 faqs', or the NV site will run an app and tell you what you need.

Oh-if any of your 630s fans were actually running 100%, you would hear it throughout your home ( esp. the 2 120s).

are you refering to the Automatic fan control box?  if so it is already checked that's one of my issues.. reguardless of what i put in the fan control reverts back to 55%..  i have tried using a dif profile, but it always goes back to 55% ..

Chris- I've tried every permutation of box-checking/unchecking, saving, rebooting, updating and reinstalling ( all with customer support). We are at the 'replace mobo' stage. Not crazy about  someone  poking  around  my hardware, but  we'll  see  what happens.

Yes, I have updated the new drivers from dells's site (also see the "LED not working thread"), at one point I even  reformatted, and I'm still having continuous problems, I called tech support several times, they walked me through the procedures, the last time I called, they said to wait for some new firmware and to call back if I have a "SERIOUS" issue.  I had recieved some blue screens during the install (but not always) of the "Latest Nvidia Performance Application" from your FAQ on the 630, a few times now the "Chasis" icon has disapeared from performance window in the control panel".  So the other day, I again unistalled all nvidia drivers, flushed them with "Driver Cleaner" software, and installed everthing one at a time.  The "Chasis" icon did not appear, I click on "Find Optimal" under GPU, recieved a Blue Screen, and after reboot, the "Chasis" icon suddenly reappeared.  But I am concerned that the software is still buggy on my system, or something else is wrong.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

on another note, everything else on the box seems great, I finally got around to doing some rendering/video work on it, and it is lightning fast in comparison to my older boxes...  

I've had my new Dell XPS 630 for approximately 20 days now.

I haven't accepted the license agreement in the performance portion of the NVIDIA control panel because I had no reason to do overclocking. Now I realize from the posts that that is where you go to change the LED colors. I had been wondering where that was.

Anyway, I'm glad that I didn't go there considering how buggy the software is. For the record, I'm using my XPS 630 out of the box (BIOS 1.0.1) without any driver updates. My HDD Fan is 10% and my PCI Cage Fan is 16%. The only time the fans rev up is when I first turn on the computer. They settle down after a few seconds.
