730HC2 ram upgrade -

Currently I have - 4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz OC'd up to 1600MHz-4 DIMMs

I ordered the 64 bit Vista DVD and would like to upgrade the ram to 8gigs as well. But I just want to make sure I am ordering the correct ram.

What I believe is correct is (x2 of course) - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

I have no idea what the difference is between the Dominator and the XMS3 brands if it will make any difference.

Little hessitant after reading that some people are having problems with the gfx cards(ATI 3870's) not both being seen after upgrading to Vista 64.

Any upgrade 730hc2 with the ATI cards to 64bit?

Thank you in advance for any input.

You can mix different types of ram but just curious why you don't just stick with the Dominator so it all matches?

The XMS3 series is the "mainstream" version. Very good memory overall.

The Dominator series is the "enthusiast" version. More geared and designed for maximum overclocking and extreme performance. Greater speeds are attainable with the Dominator series.

Personally, I wouldn't use anything but the Dominator series in the 730's.  But I don't know if you'd really see a difference in every day use of your computer between the two, from what I gather. Depends what you will be using your computer for.

Check, I didn't pickup on that the first time I read it. So it really doesn't matter what ram you go with if your gonna go to 8 gigs. The nice thing with the Dominator though is the fans. As much cooling as possible is a good thing in my opinion. My 2 cents of course, but I've had great luck with that ram just FYI.

The thing is about the fans...I've yet to hear of someone being able to get them into a 730H2C. There is not much room at all around the memory slots with the way the motherboard is. But if you can get them in there, it wouldn't hurt - not sure if it's entirely necessary though.

As far as I know, 730's come with 1GB sticks in the 4GB total configuration...so all slots would be filled already. So he would have to replace all the RAM in his system to get to 8GB total.

The only reason I didnt go for dominatior is I cant seem to find it @ 1333. I only thing I see is XMS at newegg and dell doesnt have anything at all. I will try to look around later today during my lunch hour. Im just pretty confused as to what the proper timing and voltage requirement is for the 730hc2 and being that it OC's to 1600 I want to make sure I get the correct parts ordered. - thanks for the input so far all

Corsair Dual Channel 4096MB PC12800 DDR3 1600MHz Memory

The price difference is only like 15 bucks vs 1333, anything I have look out for? Im not to computer savy anymore but it seems there shouldnt be any issues. Would love to hear more peoples suggestions

Yeah, you can't get the exact Dominator series 1333mhz from any online retailers. Trust me...I spent a ton of time looking into all of this. It's made specifically for Dell from what I gather.

The best switch for our system is this from what I've learned: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145206

Expensive...yes. But it has dropped about $100 per kit in the past month.

I know another 730H2C owner that put these in his system with no problem. He just said to make sure that EPP 2.0 is enabled in the bios. (Advanced -> Overclock Configuration ->EPP 2.0 memory->Auto) I can't verify this all first hand..but he installed it about a month and half ago and I haven't seen him report any problems as a result.

The speed is 1800mhz (up from the current 1600mhz)...but the timings are 8-8-8-24 and the voltage is 1.8 - which is the same as the memory already in our system.

I bought two of the kits myself but haven't installed them yet.

The only thing different about this memory is that the latencies are different (9-9-9-24) vs. (8-8-8-24 - in ours already). The voltage is the same.

Honestly I don't know if the latencies would generate a problem. Perhaps someone else can jump in here that has a bit more knowledge in this aspect of the memory.

snowerw,

I know you were looking into another type of memory, but I just wanted to let you know that I installed my new memory this morning and it's running fine. I didn't have to do anything. Just a simple remove and replace and the computer did the rest. I'm running 4GB's at 1778Mhz (The ram is rated at 1800mhz).

Thanks Aurora for the info but in my guess I dont want to spend near a grand to gain only 4 GB more ram.

Are you running 64 or 32 bit vista?

No problem...just wanted to let you know the installation went smoothly. So I don't see why yours won't be the same.

The only thing, it's really hard to get the RAM out and in because the cooling pump unit is "right there". It took me about 10 minutes to remove and replace because of that. Hopefully you have skinny fingers or someone nearby does. A few of those locking tabs are a real pain! LOL!

Right now I'm running 32 bit..but I'll be switching to 64 bit in the near future.
