Adding 2nd video card

I haven't even received my XPS 600 yet (arrives Tuesday) and I'm already disappointed with the video card I ordered with it. (standard 6800). I ordered a bunch of new games and received them yesterday and am worried I'll be displeased with the gaming result. I should have spent the extra $200 and got the 7800 GTX. Oh well, live and learn. To my question; Can I now purchase the new 7900 GT card (when it comes out) and add it, as a second card to my rig and see increased performance or should I swap the two cards? If a second (unlike) card is possible, will I have to purchase ant additional hardware to perform this function?

Thanx in advance,

Bob, you cannot add a 7900GT to your 6800 in SLI.  For SLI to work, both cards need to be the same GPU (6800, 7800, 7900).  Also remember that cards like the 7800GT and 7800GTX are different.  So, only another 7900 GT will work in your case - not another 7900GTX or something like that (if that's the card you choose to go with).

Your best bet would be to buy a 7900GT and add another at a later date.  The 7900GT is looking like an awesome card for the money.

When it comes time to add a second card, you must buy Dell's SLI bridge connector.  Any other connector will not fit due to the card spacing.

BTW, your 6800 should do fine for now as long as you're not cranking up the eye candy too much.

Thank you sir. Much appreciate the reply. I think I'll take your advice. Try what I have (for now) and upgrade to  a single 7900 (when available), then go from there. BTW, what exactly will SLI enable me to do, much better performance, I presume.

As we speak, I'm waiting for UPS to deliver my PC. It's 4:24 Eastern time and no site of them. Their web site says its "out for delivery". I'm getting nervous.

Thanks,

 Bob C.
