Adding a second hard drive to a Dimension E520
According to the on-line documentaion, the data cable for a second hard drive should be plugged into SATA 1 on the system board, but that is where the DVD drive is connected. (The documentation says that the DVD should be connected to SATA 4.) Should I move the DVD cable from 1 to 4, or should I plug the second hard drive into 4?
Many thanks.
I previously posted this "New to the Community?" but it more appropriately belongs here. Sorry for the duplication.

Well, that's what I presumed, and I thank you very much for the confirmation.

In actuality it makes no difference where you plug in the next drive unless you are setting up a Raid array. So Yes you can move the DVD to any port if you wish. Just make sure you go into the bios and enable that port

Again, my thanks for your advice and assistance. The second hard drive is installed and working, but my machine now does not recognize the DVD /CDR drive, which was originally plugged into SATA1 and is now plugged into SATA 4, which I have turned on in the setup. When I open the Device Manager, the driver marked with an exclamation point in a yellow alert, and when I right-click on the driver the message is
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
I have uninstalled the drive via the Device Manage and then reinstalled with the Add Hardware Wizard, and after it is recognized as Plug and Play (message is something like "New Hardware Found... DVD Drive"), but the next message is that a problem occurred during installing and that the device may not work properly.
I have tried rebooting with the DVD unplugged and then plugging it in and rebooting, turning off SATA4 and rebooting, and then turning it back on and rebooting -- nothing makes any difference.
Any advice for this one.
Thanks again.

two things. Is the optical recgonized in the bios correctly? double check all the connections.
Try switching the devices and see if that makes it work.

Did all that, and everything checks out; switching the devices makes no difference.
I'll try a Google search and see if this is a more general problem. Do you know what "Code 19" is?

Thanks again. That worked. I found the same information at http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread980.html
