* Produce the file in DV-AVI format
* Drag the clip to the View screen
* Select the DV output mode
* Press the Play button
* Click on the Begin button to output to TV/VCR or DV Camcorder
(6) COULD NOT DETECT DV CONTROLLER -
"How do I change from composite to Digital Video on the firewire card?". You can only change the capture setting while you are in capture mode. While in capture mode with anything on the preview (other than static) click on Settings. Then in the dialog box change the input device. Don't use the Dazzle Mojave device, instead choose the Microsoft DV Cam device. "Where did that come from?" The one Dazzle Mojave physical device, is really two virtual devices. The one called Dazzle Mojave is for composite or S-video input. The other called Microsoft DV Cam is the firewire that runs through the Dazzle break-out-box
(7) NO SOUND DURING CAPTURE PROCESS -
During analog capture, the audio as well as the video are transformed by the Dazzle breakout box into a DV (digital video) data stream, which is then transferred to the computer via a firewire or USB (high speed serial digital) link. The Dazzle breakout box's analog outputs are not involved in this process;
the purpose of the breakout box's analog audio (and video) output connectors is to support outputting of produced video & audio files FROM the computer TO an external vcr or other analog device. You will not hear any sound during capture. If you subsequently put the captured file into the Videowave storyboard and play it in the preview window, you should be able to hear (preview) the sound.
(8) AUDIO/VIDEO NOT IN SYNC ISSUE -
Using a double-RCA/mini red/white audio cable, connect Audio Out from the Movie Studio 2 Breakout Box to the Mic In or Line In jack on your computer soundcard and VCR. Movie Studio 2 will then play audio through your computer and to your VCR at the same time, allowing you to hear what you are recording. Connect your computer soundcard's Audio Out to the Audio In jacks of your speakers.
* Double-click the yellow/grey speaker icon in the System Tray by the time
* Click Options and Properties
* Insert a dot on recording
* Put a check in every box and click OK
Insert a check under Mic In or Microphone
Set the Balance controls in the center position
Position the volume control at least 3/4 way up
Neither the Standard Movie Studio Bundle nor the Premium Studio Bundle are considered professional video capture/edit programs. When capturing video from either a vcr or camera, the limit before you incur audio/video sync issues is 20 minutes. In other words, an hour of video must be broken down into three 20 minute capture files
(9) COPY GUARD SIGNAL DETECTED ERROR MACROVISION -
The Time Base Correction (TBC) unit will clean/stablize the analog video signal and will allow you to copy the tape without generating the copy guard error. I apologize, but Dell doesn't see these TBC devices.
For more information on TBC, Click Here
Unsupported possible fixes, Click Here
Capture from DVD -
In accordance with DVD Forum specifications, VideoWave prohibit users from recording DVD video streams from the DVD player analog output if the DVD title uses Macrovision anti-copy protection.
Capture from VIDEO -
When trying to capture video, a message appears noting either Copyguard or Macrovision protection. Capture will not continue. Some hardware will note video with some flashes of color or shakiness as being a signal of a copy protection scheme used on commercial videotapes, and sends a signal to VideoWave that in turn prevents capture. Only videotapes, which have no copy protection scheme, can be captured or use the above Time Base Correction (TBC) unit.
(10) BLACK BARS AROUND THE VIDEO CLIP -
The source files may not be the correct frame size or the output is not being done at the correct aspect ratio (e.g.: 4:3 for TV viewing).
* Frame size of the source files should be 720x480. The file when produced for output must be a DV-AVI file (also 720x480).
If the source file (video or still image) is not 720x480, then when being produced it will be stretched to fit. This will result in an out-of-ratio finished file with black bars around the image. The output to a television is a standard 4:3 ratio. But if the TV being used is a 16:9 format (widescreen) then your video will be displayed with black bars around it, even if captured and produced at 720x480
(11) DISTORTED OR BLURRY IMAGE -
When I view my home videos from my hard drive or CD using the Media Player software, I can the view 4" or 5" inch video just fine. When I click on the Full Screen, the video is very distorted and blurry. This is because you are taking a small image (640x480 or lower) and stretching it to over 1027x768 which increases pixel size and distorts the image

The one thing I would add concerns outputting DV to a DV camcorder. At least in the past, many people (including me) would see breakups or dropouts of audio and video every few seconds when outputting DV to some (but not all) camcorders (I have a Sony TRV30). Capturing would be OK; the problem was only evident during outputting. This was fixable only by changing the Movie Studio firewire card to a different make firewire card (which in turn meant that the Dazzle box could not be used). I have no knowledge as to whether recent changes to the Movie Studio hardware and/or drivers might have fixed this problem.

All captures, whether from a DV source (such as a DV camcorder) or an analog source (such as a vcr or an analog camcorder) are done in dv/avi format, at the data rates you correctly described. Part of the reason for this is that the link between the Dazzle breakout box and the firewire card in the PC is itself a firewire (high speed digital) link, and analog inputs are therefore converted to digital in the breakout box before transmission to the firewire card in the PC.
Conversion to more compact formats is accomplished in the final step of the editing process (variously referred to as "producing," "building" or "rendering"). At that point you will have many choices of format, including formats compatible with DVD, VCD, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, etc. This is discussed further in the Videowave manual, which includes (in one of the last few chapters) a nice table of typical data rates & file sizes for various formats. My question is this. I am capturing from an analog VCR using the Dazzle BOB/Microwave 4 combo in the Preimum Movie Studio bundle. It seems like there is only one capture format available: DV Soft compression (dvsd), data rate of 3527 kb/sec; frame size of 720 x 480 pixels; 30 fps. I assume this is optimized for VCR composite/tuner capture. This results in a .AVI file size of roughly 3.5 Mb per second of capture so a 4 Gb file equates to about 20 minutes.
This may sound like a stupid question, but how will I then get 2 hours on a DVD+R disk that holds 4.7 Gb? Will the MyDVD software compress this further?
Is there an option to decrease the file size by changing any of these parameters on the Capture -> Settings -> Advanced tab. Also there is no "Video Template" tab as described in the VideoWave manual.
Thanks for your guidance.

No way am I going to download the Nvidia driver. Last week I tried to download the update from their website and a message popped up saying that WIN XP does not recognize this update and warned me not to download and install it. I did not listen and boy was I sorry. It messed up my whole machine. It stopped updating in the middle and then I was left with nothing. It took me all day to get it back to the prior driver.
Will this update help my dazzle to work better?
Can you guarantee I won't have the same problem if I download and install yours???
I have the 8200.

Bluelightbox:
Thanks for compiling all of this information, but there is NO reason for Dell Customers to have to jump through all of these hoops. Having to spend an additional $300 for a device which will allow me to capture my home videos (bypassing the VideoWave copy protection errors) is ludicrous. Chopping my home movies/videos into 20-minute segments in order to avoid sound/video out of sync issues is laughable!
Dell should RECALL this movie studio bundle. Dell should inform all customers who purchased same that they will send a serviceman to their homes to remove this, and install a workable suite of products which will perform as originally advertised.
If I were a Dell employee, I would be extremely embarrassed about this! This is like purchasing a new car, then being told that, in order to use it, you need to replace the new 17" tire rims with 17.375' rims in order to operate it according to specifications!
Michael - this is a huge PR problem. You had better step-in and fix it. I will do my best to influence my fellow executives to continue in our relationship with IBM.

I had been experiencing the usual problems with Dazzle and VWave 4.0 as described many, many times in these bulletin boards:
1. The video captured in Video Wave 4.0 having the video and audio signals "out of sync". This is a different problem than described in 2 below.
2. Occassionally, the captured video and audio is synchronized reasonably well. After editing the capured video in V W 4.0 and saving, the resultant file again has the video and audio signals "out of sync". Very disturbing, seeing those lips moving, followed by the voices a second or two later!
3. When attempting capture from my Handycam Hi8 tapes, certain scenes would trigger the Dazzle "Macrovision copyguard detected - stopping capture" uh, "feature". I have an entire 2 hour tape that would not capture at all through Dazzle.
What worked for me:
I spent $269 for a Canopus ADVC-100 analog/digital capture device. Similar to the Dazzle external device, with the difference being that Canopus works... and works very well! None of the problems mentioned above have been encountered.
Questions I had about the Canopus product prior to purchase, and my after-the-fact answers:
Q. Canopus ADVC-100 attaches to computers using a Canopus-supplied firewire cable. Will I be able to plug this cable into one of the 2 firewire ports on my existing Dazzle PCI card and capture?
A. Yes. Works just fine! You may want to disconnect the 2 Dazzle cables from that PCI card and burn the entire Dazzle external device in effigy. Will at least reduce the clutter behind your computer! I had purchased a new pci card from Adaptec which provides both USB 2.0 and Firewire ports for my new Epson 3200 scanner - and plugging the Canopus into a FW port on the Adaptec card works just fine too.
Q. Since the Canopus ADVC-100 package does not include any software, what software which I already have will work in capturing my videos through this device?
A:
For capture, the familiar Video Wave 4.0 software works properly, with the video/audio signals synchronized properly. The Canopus device is advertised to "lock audio to video", which solves the problem. One caveat - do not edit the captured video file with VideoWave... this software will continue to save the edited video "out of sync" with the audio. Edit in MovieMaker 2.0 (import into collections) or some other product. My new USB/FireWire PCI card came with ArcSoft ShowBiz, which also works fine for editing purposes.
You can also capture directly by using MovieMaker 2.0. Choose the non-Dazzle device listed and capture away! One nice feature of the MovieMaker 2.0 is that you can capture from either your HandyCam tapes or live video from your camera in several formats. No need to create a huge .avi file on capture for videos which you may want to post to a website. You can capture to .wmv at various bitrates which are more conducive to web use. If you are interested in pointing your HandyCam camera at your driveway and capturing direct to disk for 24 hours, capturing at 150kbps will use 1.7 GB of disk space - not bad at all. If you are capturing home movies for later writing to DVDs, it is best to use the DV-AVI Digital Device Format which takes up a huge part of your hard drive, but provides the best quality on later transfer to DVD. Delete those captured .avi files after making your DVDs to free-up space for your other captures.
The ArcSoft ShowBiz mentioned above also captures through the Canopus device. No problems!
Also worth mentioning is that all HandyCam tapes which I have thus far run through the Canopus ADVC-100 have not encountered the maddening "MacroVision Detected" kiss of death. Works like a charm!
And if your goal is to capture from your DV camera or an analog HandyCam, edit, and then output onto VHS videotapes - the ADVC-100 supports this! No problems at all. No wasted hours attempting to force a defective product such as Dell's Dazzle and VideoWave 4.0 proprietary bundle to function as advertised!
The dip switches on the bottom of the Canopus device will likely need to be reviewed out of the box and set to:
1 off
2 on
3 off
4 off
5 off
6 off
Other than this, it's just a matter of connecting the wires, similar to how you were connecting wires from your camera or VCR to the Dazzle device!

Right now I am just trying to capture a still image from analog video. I have done this before but forgotten how. I got help from Roxio over a year ago and now they cannot help as VideoWave 4.0 is end of life. Can you walk me through the steps. I am having no trouble capturing the inital clip, however none of the mode icons are lighting up. Hope you can help
Thanks
