annoying usb bug...

hello, i have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with xp, sp3 and there is this MPEG-4 video file that is 5.46 GB and i have a 15.0gb transcend usb flash drive and you can almost fit 3 of the same file but you can only fit 2, and whenever i try to transfer the file onto it, it says something like:

"the disk in the destination drive is full. insert a new disk to continue"

Why wont a 5.46gb file copy to a 15.0gb usb flash drive?

Open The My computer icon in XP or Vista or 7 and right click on the USB Flash drive and Format NTFS.

Doing this DESTROYS ALL DATA ON the flash drive.

OR

If you use the DOS CMD.EXE  window and convert  E: /fs:NTFS  it you will not lose data on the drive as long as you

shut down and not jerk the drive out before safe removal is possible.

This assumes that the drive letter of the flash drive is E:

Hi Bryce,

Easy there, buddy, you'll wear out your question mark key. :emotion-2:

Although your question is really an OS question, not a desktop hardware question, the solution is likely that your flash drive is not set up correctly. There are two options for flash drives, "optimize for performance" and "optimize for quick removal". You want the performance option.

Are you sure you're using the right drive letter for the flash drive when you're trying to copy that file?

Are there some hidden files on the flash drive taking up the space? Or maybe the flash drive just failed?

To make hidden files visible in Win XP, open any folder on your hard drive.

Click  Tools>Folder Options

Click View tab

Scroll down and select "Show hidden files and folders"

Click OK

Warning: Making this change will make normally hidden Windows OS files and folders visible. You need to be careful not to delete or move any of the files on the hard drive that were previously hidden from view.

Now examine the contents of the flash drive. If there is a bunch of hidden files on the flash drive, you'll have to decide which ones can be safely moved elsewhere (eg onto the hard drive).

When you're done, be sure to change the View tab option back to "Do not show hidden files and folders".

it is in drive (f) because i have a second hard drive using drive (d) and the disk drive using drive (e)

and i don't think space is an issue, and the thingy says that it is its compatible with xp, and i have gotten other files on it, maybe the file is too big for windows to move.

k i found a did "optimize for performance" and  tried to add the file, and it still wont work.

i could not find the show hidden files, but i hardly think that is the case.

i tried to search for an update in the thing and it says it is most updated.

*I SAW THAT IT SAID ITS FILE SYSTEM IS FAT32*

You could try running chkdsk on the flash drive.

  1. Connect flash drive and double-click My Computer on the desktop
  2. Confirm the drive letter assigned to the flash drive
  3. Open Cmd window
  4. At C:\ prompt, type in:   chkdsk D: /f
  5. Press Enter

NOTE: Replace D: in that command with drive letter actually assigned to the flash drive by Windows

FAT32 has a single file size limit of 4 gigs.  :emotion-3:

Open a dos window and Convert E: /FS:ntfs

or format the Flash Drive NTFS.

The other possibility is that the Flash Drive has counterfeit specs and is only 2 gigs or 4 gigs in size.

The manufacturer's rating of 15GB is not using the same numerical system that Windows uses when calculating a file size.  It is the difference between decimal and binary number bases.  That is why a manufacturer tells you that you have a 2TB hard drive but Windows tells you that it is only 1.81TB.  A 15GB device actually holds something over 14GB of data as calculated by Windows.  Manufacturers do this to make a better impression for sales purposes.

You need to change the file system to NTFS. That will fix the problem.
