Thanks again, but my problem this time is finding out what the "asset tag" is. I've identified the "service tag" and "express service code," but I have no idea what number on that sticker on the side of my machine is the "asset tag."
You probably don't have an Asset Tag number. It's been a while since I've had a new Dell, but with the older systems there never was an Asset Tag number assigned to the systems sold to the home consumer. The assignment of an Asset Tag was something that a business or corporation did so that they could keep track of their individual computers systems. The business purchaser could also request that Dell assign an Asset Tag number when each system is built. For the home consumer, just think of it as an owner applied number.
hey there, i have bought a new inspiron n4010 one month back. initially i had a 5400rpm toshiba hard drive (HD,320,S2,5.4,P11,2.5,TSHBA-CB--> what does this mean??), it crashed and i got a replacement a western digital scorpio blue hard drive (WD WDC3200BEVT 320gb, 8mb buffer, sata ii 3gb/s interface, average latency 5.5ms, ). it was replaced by the local dell representative. but the problem was that after the replacement my windows experience index subscore for primary drive fell down to 5.5 (initially it was 5.9 with the toshiba HDD) and in the course of the examining the reason for the fall i found that there was no service tag and asset tag in the BIOS. there was an option for setting the service tag in the BIOS thru which i set the service tag...but i cant find the asset tag anywhere, neither in the box, nor in the back of the laptop. so what does this mean?? how do i set my asset tag...or did my laptop never came with an asset tag?? i remember having a service code in the BIOS before the replacement..coz i had checked the service tag with that in the box... so do i need to worry???? p.s. can you suggest why my WEI fell down after the replacement?? is it because the replacement HDD is inferior to the factory supplied toshiba hdd???

thanx for the reply... but the process you described is too long and i dont have the resource cd as well... but if the new dell laptops dont come with the asset tags then i dont have to worry, do i?? if its so then most probably the asset tag in the BIOS was empty from the beginning, its only that i hadn't noticed it, isn't it??? but i doubt this, i think that there wasn't any place for entering the asset tag, it has appeared just now, after the repair. but what i get from you is that even if its empty i dont have to worry, RIGHT???

Seckatary,
Use that Asset Tag boot disk I directed you to earlier and use the Syntax I have listed below for entering your Asset Tag into the BIOS.
ASSET new_asset_tag xxxxxxxx X = Specify new asset tag number.

Asset tags are optional entered by users.
Replacement motherboards require the Service tech to put the correct service tag in for support.
