Attempt to reset the display driver

Hello

When I start up my PC, shortly after the Windows logo appears a blue screen appears with the following:

A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover timeout failed.

If this is the first...

I think the issue lies with graphics card. I am able to run the PC in Safe Mode. This is where I uninstalled the driver. I then started the PC up normally and reinstalled the driver, restarted the PC and it reverted back to blue screen as it had done before.

I would be grateful to receive some help on this issue.

Thanks

Luke

What PC model and version of Windows?

Are you sure the old driver got completely uninstalled? Sometimes video driver files get left over and the new driver installation doesn't overwrite them, potentially leaving corrupted files on the HDD.

Where did you get the new driver and does it support whatever version of Windows you're running?

The PC is a Dell Studio XPS 8100 and it's running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I downloaded the new driver from the Nvidia website.

I'll have another go at uninstalling and installing the driver again.

Thanks

Hello

I contacted Nvidia and they provided me with software to completely remove the driver. I then went through the process of installing an edition of the driver that they suggested and it has not worked.

Is the graphics card likely to be faulty?

Thanks

You can try reseating the video card in its slot, but since it works in Safe Mode that may not help.

  1. Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy all current BIOS settings (or take digital photos of the screens)
  3. Power off and unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open the case and remove motherboard battery
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. Remove video card and reseat it in the slot
  8. Use some canned air to blow out the dust bunnies
  9. Reinstall motherboard battery
  10. Close case and reboot with only mouse, monitor and keyboard attached

If that works, reboot and go back into BIOS setup. Make sure all the settings match what you copied or change to match.

If it still doesn't work, you can remove the add-in video card and switch the monitor over to the onboard VGA port (assuming monitor has VGA). At least that should get you working again until you get a new video card. And after switching to onboard VGA, use the NVidia software to remove their driver.
