Go to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Services. Scroll down the list until you find Windows Audio near the bottom of the list. Make certain that the note to the right of the title says "Started". If not, double click Windows Audio and look near the center of the box that appears to find Type of Startup. If this does not say Automatic, change it to that and exit out of the box and control panel. Restart the machine. If this does not do it you may need to remove the audio device in the Device Manager and allow Windows to reinstall it to correct any fouled up settings.
If you continue to have trouble, I suggest you post your next question in the Portables/Audio section. The troubles there are sometimes a bit different from what you find here in the Desktop forum.
