Bios - "cannot run under a protected environment"

This is probably a dumb question, but...I want to upgrade the bios on my WS 610 and I keep getting the "cannot run under a protected environment" when I try to execute off the floppy. I disabled Norton Antivirus 2002 just in case and still no joy. Maybe the "protected environment" is caused by Windows XP. Any ideas out there?
By the way, XP and new Ad-aware 5.8x freeware do not like each other.

Thanks,

Mark

ward3218,

Are you booting to the floppy or trying to run it within windows? You should be booting to that floppy disk in order to update the bios.

I'm getting the same error. I'm actually trying to create the boot disc. I've downloaded the A15.exe to my desktop. Now I have a blank floppy in the drive. When I try to execute the bios update so it will actually write to the floppy disk and create a bootable bios upgrade I receive the error.

'm having trouble getting the "A15" bios to run. I have successfully downloaded the .exe to my desktop. When I double click it the blue dos screen pops up, waits, and a red error box appears saying," Cannot run under a protected environment. press any key to exit. Rom update not performed."  I already made sure the file isn't archived or read-only. I don't know how to execute the exe so I can create the flash floppy. I tried to execute the A15.exe under both 2000 and Win98. Please help.

Thank you so much.

Hi.

I will try to explain what is meant by executing the BIOS Upgrade from a floppy, and probably why you are getting a 'protected mode' error message.

The BIOS Executable program is a DOS application. It needs to be run from the DOS Prompt as in from C:>

Therefore, you need to type the executable file's name once your PC boots up in the DOS environment, from a floppy as opposed to from your HDD. No Windows!!!

To boot your PC in the DOS environment, so that you can execute your BIOS Update executable program, it is best to format a disk from DOS or Win9x OS (and check the COPY SYSTEM FILES option during FORMAT)- Just by right clicking the A: drive and selecting FORMAT from the pop-up menu in Explorer - if you are using Win9x.

I hope this is helpful.

You are getting the 'protected environment' error message because the OS is 'active' and will not allow an executable like the BIOS Upgrade to over write files of importance to it such the kernel.

By booting up from a floppy disk, you eliminate the OS from the equation and no error message. That's the theory anyway. See how you get on.

You will know that you have the right floppy, when you see a file called COMMAND.COM on it after you format it; as described above.

If you don't know how to create a bootable floppy disk, go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm  pick your poision, run it, it'll make a bootable diskette (complete with cdrom drivers if you ever need it)  should be enough room on it to copy your bios update to it, boot up to a: prompt and run your exe bios update.
