BIOS Upgrade

I take it you are booting from a floppy (or CD) into DOS.  The problem is with the memory manager for memory above 1M .  You are trying to run more than one memory manager and it is saying it won't let the second one run.  I suspect the BIOS update will succeed regardless.

Before I try again, I thought I better have a search to find out what memory above 1M is. Plenty of articles talking about it but still none the wiser what it actually is.

 

Could you briefly explain what 1M is or point me to some info, thanks?

 

Also, just remembered my system currently says 2v. Alternative CPU's have different voltage. Am I correct that the CPU adjusts the voltage automatically to it's own requirements?

In the old DOS (16-bit) days, computers could access up to 1 MB of memory using normal memory addressing.  However, there were memory extenders than allowed 32-bit processors to access the memory above 1 MB in DOS.  Most programs couldn't use because they only "knew" about the lower 1 MB. 

I doubt the BIOS program cares.

Regardless, your error message only said that you already had a memory extender and it wasn't going to allow a second to be run.  Your boot disc is the problem.
