Black Screen When Using User Switching in Windows XP
When switching users in windows XP, I get a black screen. The user account logs on, but the screen is black. I can tell that it is logged on and working because I can blindly click on desktop icons and they will open. Also I can press the windows logo key + L to log off. I then blindly log on to my account which is password protected and viola the screen goes back to normal. The screen never goes black on my account, only on the other user's account. That account is administrative as well as mine, but the other one is not password protected.
Because everything works fine and the account actually does log on, I figure it must be a video issue for the screen to go black. I have updated the video drivers, but that does not help. It is an integrated intel extreme graphics chipset. Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone know how to solve it?
Thank you.
My System:
Dimension 4700
Windows XP
256MB Memory - 1 Module
Pentium 4 with HT (not sure exactly which Pentium 4, but it is 2.8 GHZ and has HT technology)
Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics
(Basically a computer that gets the job done, but nothing to brag about at all)

Thank you so much for helping. When first booting up and logging on to the other account, the video works just fine. The black screen only appears after selecting switch users and then later going back to the account to try to log on. It seems to only happen if programs have been left running on the account too though I am not 100% sure.
I will turn disable fast user switching, reboot, then enable it again. Hopefully that will fix the problem. Again, thank you so much.

Well, I disabled fast user switching, rebooted, then enabled it again. I was logged on to the other account (the one with the problem), opened some programs, then selected switch user. I logged on to the password protected account then selected fast user switching. I went back to the other account to log on and the black screen was back.
Any other suggestions?
Do you think maybe one account being password protected while the other is not has something to do with it? I will add a password to the other account to see what happens.
Could it be that the two accounts have different display settings? I will go back and make both accounts have the same theme, font, dpi etc.
Could it be a setting with the integrated video or a problem with the video hardware (intel extreme graphics)? If so, I would have no idea where to start here.

Password on both accounts: Did not work, still see Black Screen
Same display settings: Did not work, still see Black Screen
I do not know what to try next. Please help?

I think I have pin pointed the problem.
When I leave Microsoft Word open, the screen comes up just fine upon log on.
When I leave Internet Explorer open with a blank page, the screen comes up just fine.
When I leave Internet Explorer open with any web page pulled up, the screen comes up black. What could possibly be causing this to happen just because a web page is open when I switch user?
Also, it may have something to do with the video driver. I cannot update the intel graphics driver offered on Windows Update.
