blinking amber power light.

Question

I was working within Microsoft Office when my computer shutdown.  The only thing that remained on was a blinking amber power light.  I open the side panel and a green led is also on.  The four green leds on the back of the computer are off and both fans.  I tried to recycle the power but i only have a blinking amber power light and a green led on the motherboard.

You probably did, but first check the power in connector to make sure it is pushed in the PS tight as well as into the wall/surgeprotector tighly also. The light will blink (one reason) if the connectors are not in all the way??? Hope that is all it is!

Unplug the power from the computer ( and then from the wall/surgeprotector )and push in the power supply button a couple of times to bleed off residual power. Wait about 10 seconds and plug the computer back in and the wall plug to a different outlet. Then if that does not work, unplug and bleed off power again. Put on an anti static wrist strap (to prevent static electriciy damage)  and push in on the motherboard power connector to make sure it is in the socket tight. If all that doesn't work, my money is on a bad power supply. Message Edited by dogin on 01-09-2004 02:15 PM

Did you try another outlet bypassing anything in between like a surge protector. The blinking light indicates a power problem 'in'. Try another cord too!

Your PSU (power supply unit) is shot. The CPU power connector is not working - that is why your still getting the MOBO led to come on because yoru main power harness is still providing power.   Call dell and order a replacement. If its not under warranty you can find them cheap online (around $30).
