Blower fan runs continuously

My blower fan runs continuously.  It shuts off and then immediately starts running again.  Do I need a new one?

Thx,

I have a Diminsion 4500.  I read the front of the motor and it says "Brushless Motor Fan"  It has big blue letters on it that read NMB. The model # is: 3612KL-04W-B66.  It's located almost have way down the right side of the back of my tower.  Does this help you?  Thx a bunch.  Peg

is the fan still running after you shutdown your computer?

No, it shuts off about 30 seconds after I shutdown but starts up immediately on startup.

That exactly the way the case/processor fan is suppose to work, to keep the processor cool.

Thanks for your reply.  I've had this computer for 2 years and it never ran continuously before.

Since you've had the computer for two years maybe dust and lint is keeping your processor from keeping cool.  You should try to hinge open the case and spray it off with canned air to remove any dust and lint built up inside.  Use the plastic tube that comes with the air since it concentrates the blast of air better.  You should see a green cover that is over the processor cooling fins.  It will hinge up and spray off the cooling fins on top of the processor.  When spraying off components be careful not to freeze them by holding the can upside down or spraying on one spot too long.  You can't freeze anything in a few seconds so don't worry too much about it though.  Let us know if this fixed the problem

Thanks for your response Russell.  I tried to reply to you earlier but nothing was happening when I hit the reply button - must have been a glitch in the system.  Anyway, the strangest thing happened.  My husband was in the office fixing my office chair and when he turned the chair over it sort of banged on the floor and voila - the noise quit.  The fan blower is still on which I guess it should be but the noise has "finally" stopped.  I am going to blow it out anyway as you suggested - maybe it was just dust.  The noise was really annoying - I could hear it even coming down the hallway towards my office.  Thank you so much - and have a nice day tomorrow.

If after cleaning the dust from inside the case and the fan is still noisy and you are under warranty, contact Dell's Technical Support and request a replacement fan.

Thanks Bev,

I haven't had a chance to clean it yet but it started making noise again.  I'll clean it after work tonight.  It seems like it makes noise, stops, makes noise again.  It's going to make me crazy yet! If I move the tower it stops for a second and then starts all over again.

pelwer.

If your computer is under warranty, contact Dell's Technical Support and request a replacement fan. If not, you can buy a replacement fan from Dell Spare Parts, Phone 1-800-357-3355 x 69937 M-F 8 to 5 CDT and have the system's "Service Tag" handy.

It's not still under warranty, so maybe I'll order a new one.  Thanks again for your input.
